There's no reason to be proud of having basic human rights. Those should be taken for granted.

Mediocre_man90

That's a rather ignorant thing to say. No rights or freedoms should be taken for granted. If you aren't proud to have rights and freedoms, what reason would you have to fight for them if they were to be taken away?

Earning basic rights and your freedom from dictatorship is different from being born into them. There's no purpose in being overly grateful for something you've never fought for... or never understood the lack thereof. And there's definitely no reason to be proud to adhere to a particular nationality for those basic rights.

That was not an answer, and was not something I even agree with. Totally separate and incorrect aside.

It was not a hypothetical situation I'd deem credible. To be more clear, I wanted to say that you have to experience regret for doing something like that if you were to think that you shouldn't blind the people you love. In cases in which people experience deep regret, yes, I view prolonged punishment as being unnecessary. Unfortunately, that can never be known for sure; that is why the law exists - to enforce the physical side of punishment in a preventive manner, but *not* torture or kill criminals who are already confined.

[QUOTE="sammyjenkis898"] Agreed. I think she should have compensation from him to cover her medical care AND be able to blind him. He's ruined her life. I also think we should bring that part of their law over here :)tofu-lion91

What the hell does an Iranian court decision have to do with being a "proud american"?

This?

[QUOTE="Jandurin"][QUOTE="JabbaDaHutt30"][QUOTE="Jandurin"] Then how about consequence

I do not want to decide what the ideal form of bunishment would be, since I don't want to imply that anything else would be an "unfit punishment." Why I am against this is because first of all, it is a form of torture. I am against torture. Second, the woman said that she wants to prevent such future incidents, and that she does not demand this course of action for the need of revenge. I believe she wants the wrong thing, for the right reason. There are other, less lustful ways of preventing such future happenings.

Only preventative? Answer me this: If you could look into this fellow's future. Like seriously see his whole life, and saw that without any punishment or consequence whatsoever, he lived a normal life from then on... would you say that then he deserved no punishment as whatever he had done in the past, his future was unblemished?

Unfortunately, people do not function that way. You don't just *change* all of a sudden.

Another reason why I am against this would be that the court took on the victim's demand.

[QUOTE="Jandurin"][QUOTE="JabbaDaHutt30"][QUOTE="Jandurin"] Have you seen what condition he left the woman in?

Yes.

What do you think is fitting retribution?

It is not a matter of retribution.

You know, all who said that they were not proud to be American should be proud that they can say it and not be afraid that someone from the government will come and hunt you down.

I came from a country where you and your family would be hunted down and killed or maybe taken away if you ever dare to say something bad about your president or your country. I know a friend of mine who lost a brother just because he said something that could be interpreted as an insult to the president. His mom is about to die, and no one knows where that brother is. I am very glad I am outta there now.

If you don't feel proud, please think twice. A country that allows you to say that should be loved. Trust me.

Pfffff, so freaking what? Im also allowed to say whateever I want about my goverment, our sense of freedom is even higher than the American one and Im still not patriotic. Patriotism is for the dumb and blind. And for the last **** time, America is NOT THE ONLY FREE COUNTRY IN THIS WORLD!! Damn you ignorants

There's no reason to be proud of having basic human rights. Those should be taken for granted.

And what to basic rights have to do in particular with being American?
