For me the main attraction of AC is the history - and the closer it gets to the 21st century, the less interested I get. An ancient setting would be my vote for the next AC, Egypt, Rome or even Mesoamerica during the Olmec or Mayan civilisation. Maya especially would tie in really well with the whole 2012 apocalypse aspect.

Oh god this game was scary as ****! I feel anxious just watching you guys play. The worst bit was when the facehugger implanted you with an egg and you had a limited time to find a medical kit and remove the embryo before it hatched and killed you. So stressful! Brilliant.

This is why I don't buy digital unless it's significantly less expensive than a physical copy (which when dealing with XBLA and PSN never happens) - why pay more for a product that you don't even own and can do nothing with once you're done with it? It just doesn't make any sense...

Maybe it's better value on Steam, I don't know as I'm not a PC gamer.
