I've only started playing this in the last week and while I've not had a huge amount of time on it, it is pretty damn good and I agree fully with the review.
I've played all the assassin's creed game and I wasn't that fussed about revelations. ACIII I was expecting to be really bad thanks to the many reviews putting it down but when I played it I was happily surprised. I enjoyed that a lot more than revelations and while I agree that there are a lot of things that pull you out of the world like the annoying "Do this for full Sync" I still think that they did a good job.
Personally I'm looking forward to Black Flag, with it being set on the piratical waters of the Caribbean which is a pretty good setting, some things that I've seen in the trailers which reminds me of Bethesda's Pirates of the Caribbean. I hope that it doesn't end up being uninspiring like Revelations and I hope that there will be less boring side quests, namely the collectables.
I think one of the main reasons why this series might have deviated from it's original path (aside from being a big money grabbing scheme) is the lack of big assassinations. In AC and AC:II there was a long list of people you needed to kill in order to get at the larger guys. There were plenty of reasons why each one should die and there are effects seen. In the more recent games the assassinations were less about actually trying to stop a templar plot and more of just a couple of guys that pissed you off. In AC:III the assassinations seemed less like what they should be, stealth orientated infiltration and kill, but instead seemed to me to be more like someone walking up to the enemy and challenge him to a duel to the death. Rinse and repeat with the next guy who pissed the character off. Unless the mission specifically suggested it (which wasn't common and I don't think there were many for the actual assassination missions) stealth was not required. You could charge in and hack everything apart. I would be good if there was like a kind of setting up of the assassination. I will use the pre-heist missions from GTA as an example. Also, there weren't really any noticeable effects of the death. Everything seemed to pretty much carry on regardless of the big dude dying.
Hopefully, Black Flag will combine a good pirate RPG with some proper assassinations.
I'm going to add that the animus storyline had a lot of prospects in the beginning but the execution of the storyline is pretty bad. There's barely any emotion over the modern characters. I don't really give a damn about Desmond and I wasn't even fazed by what happened to Lucy. The only ones I like are Shaun and Rebecca.
"His comments came just days after the Washington Navy Yard shooting in which 13 people were killed by a gunman who reportedly played violent games for hours on end."
As usual they neglect to mention that the subject in question had mental health issues. This is always the case, violent video games are just as influential as violent movies. All it takes is someone with issues to watch or play something with violence to flip. It's all about the mental health.
