I see some people saying religion is evil and the world would be better off without religion. Now, I know full and well of the atrocities that people of some religions have done and are still doing today, but if you look at the other side of the coin, there are a lot of religious hospitals and schools, and there are religious people just trying to make the world a better place by helping in 3rd world countries. I just would like to know some of your guys' opinions on this.

RationalAtheist

There are many good non-religious schools and secular organisations helping third world countries too.

I think religious schools are a dangerous idea.

Yeah, I know I was just mentioning the religious ones.

How come you think religious schools are a bad idea?

[QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"] So how many deaths do you consider okay?LJS9502_basic

You're going into a different issue here of morality. Any amount of deaths by soldiers is okay if the war is for a just cause, but that's beside the point. I never said anything about war being okay, I just said some are more horrific than others. I would consider WWII more horrific than the Kosovo War because there was many more deaths, body mutilation, and mental problems than the Kosovo War.

Which brings me back to my question since you ARE using death toll etc as the barometer.

Oh, I guess I didn't understand your original question. Yes, I am using that as the barometer.

[QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"] Really? Which war doesn't cause death and destruction? Which war doesn't mutilate bodies nor cause mental problems?LJS9502_basic

Some cause it on a bigger level than others which I would consider more horrific.

We've been doing it for thousands and thousands of years, so I would say so.

I'm definitely going to have to go with World War I if we are just talking about the actual war part because the tactics were too outdated for the new weaponry they had which created the bloodbath that it was. Treanch warfare is a horrible thing, having to charge trenches with bayonets while taking machine gun fire, poisonous gas exploding around you. The only thing worse was actually living in the disease-infested trenches.

[QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"]I'm not getting into the entire abortion debate but I will say that government in the US is supposed to be for the people, by the people yadda yadda yadda so it bothers me when you say people shouldn't have the right to tell the government what they think.Jandurin

They should be able to, that is a huge thing that is needed for the USA but I am talking about the Catholic Church and how they try to push controversial issues which would be better just left alone and giving people choice.

get a better religion

I'm expressing my views on the subject, the Church can do whatever they want but I am expressing my views. You see people complaining about the government all the time so would your response be, "get a better government".
