Gender roles will probably never dissapear unfortunately, which Is a huge part of why males are a lot more emotionally stunted than us females.
When I was a kid, my parents let me do it all: I could wear dresses and play dolls if I wanted to, I could run around with my little brother and play sports with him; basically I was allowed to do "boy" things and "girl" things.
My little brother on the other hand was strictly confined to just "boy toys", such as sports and cars. My parents would always make sure to reinforce how important it was for him to be strong, without ever feeling the need teaching him to express his emotions. As a result, he grew up getting in trouble a lot, fights, etc. Even to this day he still doesn't share with me how he's feeling, which obviously had a lot to do with my parents enforcing gender roles on us.
