I got a $500 certificate from doing Ubisoft's play test last week. I'll be getting a PS4 with it, but I also wanted to get Watch Dogs. Since that game got delayed, I'm not sure what I can get. Not interested in Killzone, and I have my eye on Knack but I'm not sure about it. Regardless, I'm dead set on a PS4 whether or not I get a game with it.

I think what makes a good review is one that's written by someone who writes for the audience the game is meant for, and not for a general audience. As a fan of fighting games, I shake my head every time when a game is scored low because it's lacking in single-player modes. The main mode is versus play, and any single player modes should be designed to prepare the player for versus. Really though, fighting game reviews should not be written until at least a month after release. There's no way the reviewer will have a solid understanding of the mechanics in a few play sessions.
I think more sites should adopt the EGM-style review system and have multiple people review a game. One person's review shouldn't speak for the site, especially if that review is misleading or contradictory. Far too many times, I've played games where they're better/worse than the reviewer let on, usually because they haven't explored enough of the game to write a more detailed review. I could list a lot of examples of questionable reviews on GameSpot alone. I also think that scores should be dropped altogether, and let the text speak for itself.
In no order:
- Street Fighter series (I've enjoyed a lot of games in this series since SF2)
- Rival Schools series
- Virtua Fighter 5:Final Showdown
- Marvel vs. Capcom 2
I'm really hoping for a new Rival Schools game, or at least Project Justice HD. The designer of the games expressed interest in making a new game, and I hope that happens.
The first thing they should do as a committee is drop Toriyama.
The second thing they should do is put FF on the back burner and focus on their dormant IPs. FF's not working out for them, so put it away for a while.
Don't trust reviews.
Project Justice.
I like the Pixar-y look of Knack. Hope the game's good, because I'm keeping an eye on it.
Regenerating health.
I have to disagree with that. Used properly, I think it's great. It can make the game move much more smoothly. When I lose health, I don't want to waste hours peeking around corners and taking long trips backwards to try to find healthpacks.
Regenerating health sticks out as something that kills immersion when a game is striving for realism. It can also cause the player to be somewhat careless with their actions. At least with non-regen health, there some tension.
Regenerating health.
Been wanting to play some retro games lately since I haven't in a while really.
Anyone have any underrated beat em up recommendations for the NES, SNES, or Genesis?

I'm going to include fighting games because I think some people classify them as beat 'em up.
NES
- Mighty Final Fight
SNES
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters
- Knights of the Round
Genesis
Can't think of any underrated ones, but I'm not too experienced with Genesis games.
