Cartoon Network, over the last two or three years, has been on a rapid decline. When I first got ahold of Cartoon Network as a kid, maybe about eight or nine years old, I absolutely adored it. I think that was around the time it first came out, because it was right around the time Cartoon Planet stopped airing on TBS. Cartoon Network in the mid-nineties was great. They had great shows, they had great variety, and they consistantly kept adding new series to their lineup that really stayed true to old-cartoon style.
Back then, Two Stupid Dogs, The Tex Avery Show, Johnny Quest, and a grip of Looney Toons shows were always playing. It was a limited selection, but it worked. Eventually they started adding more to the lineup, especially after Cartoon Planet gave them Space Ghost: Coast to Coast.
What happens when you give a 60's cartoon icon its own late-night TV show? Nothing. That's what made Space Ghost C2C so great. It had absolutely no point. Nothing they did or said ever made any sense. It was almost as if they imposed those interviews with a cut and paste tool to match his questions. Heck, maybe they did. It was wacky, it was funny, and it was the catalyst show on the network that made way for all of the even greater classics that we have now.
Eventually, Cartoon Cartoons started airing. Dexter's Laboratory, Powerpuff Girls, and the rest started coming on. These were the next generation of cartoons. They were great. But at the same time, they're part of the reasons the network is so bad now. With those shows, we eventually saw new shows like Ed, Edd, and Eddy, which is also pretty funny, but as time went on, we saw stuff like The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Teen Girl Squad or whatever that's called, and even some show about a foster home for imaginary friends. What the heck happened?
In between the time where Cartoon Cartoons went from good to non-existant, Cartoon Network managed to swipe up rights to air the WBs superhero shows starring either Batman, or Superman, and of course everything in between those two. That was pretty cool, because, for me, at the time of their airing on Cartoon Network, I was just getting in to drawing. That faze in my life didn't last very long, but for some reason, I still enjoyed those shows. I still even like watching them now, at eightteen.
That's not to say everything about Cartoon Network has gone down the crapper. I mean, they still air Dexter's Lab really late at night, and Samurai Jack was kind of cool for a little while, but even then, these shows were few and far between. That's why they invented Adult Swim, for people like me. Those of us still pining for the lost days of quirky Cartoon Network shows from days of the past.
Adult Swim started off so great, too. For the first couple of years it was on (I think it came out in like 2002 or 2001 or something), they had some awesome shows start playing. Space Ghost came on, The Brak Show, Home Movies, even some show about a couple that I forget the name of, but it was funny. Eventually they picked up Baby Blues and Futurama and stuff like that, and even added in their own home-brewed shows.
Those being the best of the batch, naturally. Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Sealab 2021 were the names, and, in my opinion, they're the greatest cartoon shows of all time. I might just be saying that right now because I'm in to them a lot at the moment, but I laugh so much when I watch them, especially Aqua Teen. It reminds me why I still watch cartoons at my age, because, unlike real sitcoms, they can do so much more with the humor. Sitcoms can get very tedious and boring. Even though Seinfeld and That 70's Show are really funny, they get so repetitive, and they can't exactly go off on these totally wacky adventures like cartoons can. They're just awesome.
But Adult Swim has it's flaws, mostly with it's anime. Who the hell watches that crap? Why didn't they just keep it with Toonami, the psuedo-Japanese BS block for people who wear dragon and cheetah shirts they buy at Mervyn's California or Target. Ick. I hate that crap. Inugushuya is the worst show ever made. And so is Kenshin Macaroni. These shows SUCK. And then they put that crap like .hack//sign on there too, that shouldn't have ever made it overseas. It's a show about a videogame that's about a fake computer game. How can that even be real?
At least some of the anime was cool at first. Cowboy Bebop is kind of cool, mostly cause it doesn't seem like an anime. Because anime sucks. And Outlaw Star was cool when it was on, but I haven't seen that on in like five years, I don't even know if it was ever on Adult Swim. Shows like Inshyauas and Kenshin need to stay off the air, especially off of Adult Swim. And shows like .hack//sign should just have never been made in the first place. The show sucks, the idea sucks, and the game sucks. Gross.
It's really too bad Cartoon Network took the route it did, I guess they wanted to be able to compete with Saturday morning cartoons or something, but do it every day all of the time instead of just on Saturdays. It really makes me sad to see my favorite network suck so hard. I blame it on the anime.
Anime sucks.

Tomorrow God of War is finally coming out. I've been semi-watching the game since they first started pouring info at us a little before E3 2004 last year. It seemed like it had promise, afterall, it was being developed by David Jaffe. Most people would agree, he's one of the more talented and dedicated game developers out there, but where he doesn't lack in quality, he lacks in quantity. That's fine for me, because as long as he keeps up the good-streak, he's going to have a place in gamers' hearts everywhere.
It wasn't until just three months ago, or whenever it was that I got the demo for the game. I was told about it by a friend of mine around here, Jaffe was holding a psuedo-contest for people interested in receiving the demo earlier than its release in retail. All we had to do was just email him saying, "hey, gimme the game!" and our addresses of course. Within one day the game arrived at my house, not only was that surprising as all hell, but it piqued my interest in the game a lot more -- based on customer service alone!
Expecting a Devil May Cry / Ninja Gaiden type game, I went in to it with decently high expectations. The game looked sharp, it sounded sharp, and it played sharp. From everything I gathered out of the demo, it seemed like not just a game that might be pretty damn cool when it came out, but a game that had game of the year quality written all over it. Not just in like pencil or something, but in a big fat black marker, you know, the kind that smells a little funny.
The demonstration that I got ahold of was the Hydra Battle, which I'm sure quite a few of you have gotten your grubby little hands on since then. It had the instant appeal that games like Devil May Cry did, but it also had the depth and difficulty of Ninja Gaiden. For some reason, it seemed too good to be true. This was just a demo, but I couldn't find anything I didn't like about it. This seemed like it had the potential quality to rank among the best in its class, ever.
I hate to sit here and hype the game so much, considering I've only played a demo, but when the demo is better than basically every other game in the genre that I've ever played in my life, you know something's up. Jaffe is renouned as being a great developer, he made the Twisted Metal series afterall, as far as I can tell, this is going to be his claim to fame from now on. I tell you, I can't wait 'till tomorrow. I'm forgoing my Best Buy discount just so I don't have to wait 'till Thursday, it looks that good.

The new layout is actually really nice. I'm pretty happy with how it looks. I can't believe they finally added the top 10 UCBs, that's really awesome. Spartan has been asking for that since 2003, it's going to help get a lot of newcomers to System Wars II. I hope people will start posting there, but I hope people also realize we don't want spam and chat crap like some boards. Whooo!!
Everyone should join the System Wars Hangout Union started by HAL because System Wars Hangout owns big time. That was my favorite thing about the forums for a really long time, 'till System Wars II started up! This union will make it perfect, and it really fits the name. It's the database for System Wars II info.
System Wars spin-offs OWN.
The new Mods are up, what do you guys think? I think it's a great batch, and to be honest, I didn't think it was going to end up being such a solid group! I want to especially shout out to Cronowing, Megusta, and nutDAVE3 who have been good friends of mine around here for a couple of years now. Much love to those guys, and much love to all of the other picks. I'm especially excited to watch Shleco in action, 'cause I think he's one of the most level-headed, interesting characters around the boards.
And of COURSE, Peicher, who owns, but he already knows that. All the rest of you, even though I'm not going to single ya'll out, I know all of you, and I like all of you, so much love to you guys too.
I got some new clothes today. I got a button up shirt from American Eagle that is white and green, and a Pique Polo shirt from American Eagle that is white, green, and blue. I didn't pop the colar though, because my other shirt's colar is popped. Jay Kay!
So about these unions, I can't say I entirely understand. All a little too much to them at this point for me to take in at one time. I'll figure them out within the next few days, I guess. They seem okay, but my PM box is suffering like a mofo, I'm getting a grip of messages 'cause of it. Before anyone invites me to one, be wary, I'm only going to join ones that actually mean something to me. Like System Wars Hangout, the GameSpot Wankers, things like that. So before I get any invites to ones like the "People who overuse the word 'brilliant'" union, or the "Everything 'insert random game here' " union, I'm probably not going to join.
Peace out, A-Town. Dun dun, dun dun!

What are they doing?! This is worse than all of the Mario milkings I've seen. Square goes for so long and leaves their most successful game high and dry as the classic it became, but now, since they announced Advent Children, it seems that every time I turn the corner, there's some new Final Fantasy VII-based game coming out.
This is terrible. I've played a lot of RPGs, I mean, like a lot, really. Final Fantasy VII stands as my favorite game ever made, not because it was the first RPG I ever played (because it wasn't), not because it had pretty graphics in 1997 (and boy, did it ever), but because it really is the best game I've ever played. I don't know, there are a lot of reasons I think that, and I'm sure a lot of you guys probably feel the same way I do about the game. But does it need to be fiddled with?
I often hoped in the back of my mind that Squaresoft would someday release a sequel, or maybe even a remake. When the PlayStation Portable was announced at E3 in 2003, I heard some circulating rumors of maybe a sequel going to that. Turned out, as we found out in August or whenever it was, that it was actually a movie. It looked really good, and, even though I was pretty bummed it wasn't a feature-length game, it still looked like it'd be a good entry in the Final Fantasy VII universe.
But once that was announced, and it was obvious the public wasn't going to backlash a ton that it wasn't a remake or a sequel for the PlayStation 2 or PSP, all of these other games kept on getting announced. Some game based off the Turks for a cell phone, some game based off of Vincent for the PlayStation 2, some game that hasn't been explained at all, and now this snowboarding game. Am I missing anything? Give me a break! What are they trying to do, ruin the good name of their crowning achievement?
It's so disappointing that they'd do this. I mean, really, if they want to succeed with adding on to the game, stick with the movie, go with a sequel, or maybe a remake. But Cloud Boarders Tricky isn't the way to do it.

Man, you know what's great about going to bed at 3:30 and getting up at 6?

Absolutely nothing. I guarantee my weekend has been officially ruined because of that. I thought it was going to be a good idea to go out last night despite knowing I had a big team meeting at work today. 'Cause then I could go home after and go to sleep, but no, I'm not tired right now apparently. God only knows I will be by the evening though. I can't live off of two and a half hours of sleep. There are REASONS I go to bed at 8 or 9 every night, because I'm a wussy who loves to sleep, no matter what!
Good news for me though, which I'm really happy about surrounding work. First and formost, hours are steadily climbing back up. Over the holidays I worked about 30 hours a week, which was tough, but I loved that cash flow. I seriously bought a new game or two every single week in late October -- December. It was great. But once January rolled around, BOOM, hours were down to 4 or 5 a week. What the hell?! How can I pay my car/car insurance with that?! I couldn't, so I didn't. Thankfully my Daddy loves me and fronted me the cash to survive. Now I'm just... a gripload in the hole, but whatever, I can pay that back later. Anyway, I've got 17 hours this week! Not like a ton, but hell, that'll guarantee me a $200 or so check for two weeks of work, and that is going to help SO much for E3.
Second thing that's good is that at the team meeting, when we broke off in to departments for our small meetings, we played tight ass games of pictionary and charades, hehe. Like for what things were coming out and whatnot (oh yeah, I work at Best Buy, if you didn't know. Media Specialist, whoo whoo!). Then, when we went back to the full store meeting for our quarterly MVP awards and stuff, I won for my department! I mean, I'm a hell of a lot newer than everyone but one person in our department, who was hired the same day as me. I'm pretty happy with that, I wqas really surprised. I got a gift card for it, dunno how much it's for.
Hopefully I can use that to help me pay for my PlayStation Portable, if I happen to have the funds to purchase one. I mean, I really want one. I've been looking forward to it since day 1 and the rumors surrounding a FFVII sequel (which turned out to be a movie, omg wtf el log loelel), but you know, $250 is a big chunk of change when... that's pretty much all you have to your name, in checking and savings. Ouch.
With hours picking up, we'll see. I really wanted to get it at launch, to do launch coverage and shniznaws with Pat and Kev, but that's life. Maybe I can do that for the PS3 or Xbox 2... but by then I'll be a broke ass college kid, instead of a irresponsible high school senior with only one thing to really worrry about, a car -- which I happen to be sliding by with right now without my Dad knowing I indeed do have some money.
Well, that's my busy day so far. All this before 11 AM ! Two more weeks 'till spring break... yeah yeah!

Come on, JRPGs, you can do better than this.

Do you guys remember when Final Fantasy X came out in 2001? I know I do. It was the first game I ever preordered in my life. I was anticipating it more than, well, more than anything. Though I think I like Suikoden III the best of all the RPGs so far this generation, I think Final Fantasy X was the one to really peak the genre on many levels. It had the look, it had the presentation, and it certainly had the production values to back up the monumental story at hand. Final Fantasy X had it all.
What is the deal with RPGs now, then? Xenosaga Episode II is a pretty great game, I think it's probably the best turn-based RPG I've played since the first Xenosaga came out in 2003, but seriously, it doesn't even begin to approach Final Fantasy X levels. There is a lot of fluff in the genre these days, especially this year it seems. None of them seem to be that bad, Ys: The Ark of Napishtim and Suikoden IV most notably seem to fall short of their true potential by a good margin. Neither are completely worthless or hopeless in any way, and I enjoyed both to a certain extent. But come on, last generation and the generation before that absolutely prove that developers can do better than this.
The Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, PlayStation, and Dreamcast all had a good deal of great RPGs on them. Games like Xenogears, Final Fantasy III, VII, and Tactics, Grandia I and II, Skies of Arcadia, you know, there were a lot of really awesome ones over that first half a decade or so in the middle of the ninties. Now we just get a bunch of borderline cookie-cutter rehashes that don't do anything in the way of changing or shaping the genre they claim to participate in.
Xenosaga tried to change things with an overabundant narrative that more often than not felt downright intusive and forced than natural and welcome. I liked it, but I don't know too many people that feel the same way as me. Hey, if Metal Gear Solid is pinned as the interactive movie, what the heck is Xenosaga?!
All of these games just prove so often that the genre has fallen flat on its face. It's incredibly stale and hasn't really changed in a long time. The only thing that really pushes these games above the rest are if they have absolutely fantastic stories, like Suikoden III, or absolutely fantastic presentations, like Final Fantasy X. Otherwise, they're just another JRPG that doesn't do anything different from the rest of the pack.
We all know the genre has a lot of potential, it's still up in the air if games like Final Fantasy XII will be able to match the predecessors -- after Final Fantasy XI and X-2, I'm going to just play it safe and not get myself hyped up for it so I get brutally let down. I'll just cross my heart and hope to die that my ever-beautiful-looking Musashi Samurai Legend can border playable so I can relive a little bit of that Musashi magic I experienced in '98, but I doubt I will. I know Square-Enix, Konami, Namco, Atlus, and the rest of the RPG big dogs have the talent, they know how to make great games. So what's the deal? They can do better than this.

Avery Score in the Averyator. Yesterday I watched the newest GameSpotting Live videos, which I've been waiting so long for, and one of them, in particular, was quite a bit better than the rest of them. Avery's Leon S. Kenndy rip-off was actually really funny. Most of the time, I find the comedic value of these videos to be more of a subjective thing due to being so in-tune with the site. But I actually thought this was pretty funny.
If you've played Resident Evil 4 yet you probably laughed pretty hard when he made the crack about not using ladders, because the first time my friend and I played it we were saying pretty much the exact same thing.
The video is really good. Avery is the new Jeff just like pink is the new orange! But Jeff is still funny too. :P
