Sony Gamers Day?Alex_grist

Well maybe. But if it's about video content then why on Sony Gamers Day?

No one else excited about what may be announced at the press conference?

Anyone else remember this from CES ?

"One of the first examples of this strategy will be an expansion of the PlayStation Network. The network now is mostly used by gamers. Sony wants to turn it into a platform to deliver video, too. Sony will hold a press conference in two months to discuss changes to the PlayStation 3."

Since CES was at the beginning of January I guess the press conference will be very soon?

For the billionth time, the 40GB PS3 has NO EE and GS(CPU and GPU for the PS2). Crap about all the patches Sony can do and so on, but without atelast the GS theres no way a PS2 game can be played on the 40GB PS3.

@Ryzcvk
All I got from you vid link is a "Video has been removed by user"

For the the Billionth and one time 80GB ps3 HAS NO EE chip... FYI, GPU has nothing to do with software emulation. How else do you think people play "EMULATED GAMES WITH EMULATORS" on their PC with any basic crappy, even integrated gpu...

The 80GB still has the PS2 graphics card which the 40GB does not have.

Exactly. The CPU, the EE, is software emulated in the NTSC 80GB and the PAL 60GB.

The Graphics chip, the GS, is still present in those models.

For the 40GB to play PS2 games Sony has to write software emulation for the GS, which they might do in the future.

I know there is a way you can install Windows on your PS3 but I don't know how.theycallmeryan

You can NOT install XP (or any other Windows version) on a PS3.

Has noone else seen the errors in "PlayStation 3 Hardware Resource Center" ?

From "PlayStation 3 System Configurations":

PlayStation 3 80GB

"..and offers software emulation for PlayStation 2 backward compatibility."

PlayStation 3 60GB

"The newer 80GB model uses software emulation to provide PS2 game compatibility..."

PlayStation 3 40GB

"You won't find an Emotion Engine or even a PS2 software emulator in this machine."

- -

As I understand it:

The US/JP 60GB and 20 GB PS3 both have an "Emotion Engine" and a "Graphics Synthesizer" from the PlayStation 2.

The US PlayStation 3 80GB and the PAL 60GB does not have the "Emotion Engine" anymore BUT still have the "Graphics Synthesizer" is some form. The PlayStation 2 backward compatibility is a combination of software and hardware based emulation.

Since the 40GB PS3 also lacks the "Graphics Synthesizer" this version does not have any PlayStation 2 backward compatibility since Sony hasn't made a pure software emulator of both the "Emotion Engine" and the "Graphics Synthesizer".

Or am I wrong?

The Emotion Engine is the PS2 CPU. This has never been present in the PS3:s in Europe, or in the 80Gb version.

The Graphics Synthesizer is the PS2 graphics chip. This (or variants of it) has been present in all PS3's (until the 40Gb version).

Since the Graphics Synthesizer is removed in the 40Gb version the PS2 compatibility is removed. This is because it is too difficult to emulate a graphics chip (compared to emulating a CPU). It could be done but it would use a lot of resources that Sony needs elsewhere.
