It does, yes. However it's been a while since I've used it on the desktop. Should I test it?

Hey folks. I've got a laptop running Windows XP and a desktop running Windows 7 Beta. At one time, the two computers were able to run in harmony when running a LAN game on C&C:ZH, but suddenly they are no longer able to. I am directly connecting them with an ethernet cord, btw. Is there anything else you guys need to know?

Pentium 4 IS old

you should have known even an athlon 64 (which is aging alot) is faster than a P4.. they have Core 2 duo chips which are cheap. Now they have core i7 which i am upgrading to when i can be bothered to unpack my stuff and set it up.

the 3850 is not a bad card but imo you should have gotten a better one as they are not too expensive for a 4850 or even 8800 GT which plays the game greatperfect_chao

There would have been definite bottlenecking going on with those cards. Maybe you're expecting too much? What video card did you upgrade from?

Well there's nothing he can really do about the PSU - it's a Dell computer. The motherboard is probably something generic; Dell branded perhaps.

My friend's got a Dell Dimension 8400 with the following specs:

1GB RAM
80GB HDD
P4 3.4 GHz CPU
350W PSU w/ 18a on 12V rail
2 DVD Burners
Radeon X300
Windows Vista Home Premium

He's wondering if he can support a Radeon 3870 or any other card better than his current. Google yields mixed results...

[QUOTE="JP_Russell"]

That's one heck of an old motherboard. Not even 754, that's an old socket A 462-pin. Sorry, man, but I don't think you can even find processors for that socket anymore. The best processor that was made for it that I know of was the XP 3200+, but it really wouldn't be worth getting even if you could find one. Just save your money up until you can get a new processor, motherboard, memory, video card, and power supply (probably).

jake-sf

Well, I can't save up my money. I upgrade now, or I wait in a year or 2 for the next upgrade. I don't think you care for me to explain all my financial situation, but that 300$ is still all I'll have for it for a long time.

Your video card is a bad thing because, well, it sucks. It may or may not get by with even the lowest settings in modern games. Coupled with only 1GB of RAM (actually, 768MB if you use the motherboard the guy found, which I'll explain further down), You're going to have trouble running just about anything today.

JP_Russell

Well, I can just buy another 512 mb DDR stick.

And modern game, whats a modern game, something from 2008? At which point I really dont care. I'm not here to run Crysis or anything. 7300 GT doesn't suck, its spot on what I want, I just want the rest to do the job as well.

As I understand the 3.0 dual core wouldn't work at its best, true, but that would still be an improvement, right?

Tell me it runs TF2 very smoothly and most games before this, and I'm happy.

Very smoothly? Sorry, but I don't think anyone here will be able to tell you that. The 7300GT will give you rubbish performance in TF2 and any comprable titles. Not to mention the whole CPU+RAM situation...

[QUOTE="Baselerd"]I think the corsair HX620W should be fine for any normal crossfire setup. it has 50a on the +12v rails. Thats more than you will find on some 750 w psu's. Unless he want's to do hd4870x2 crossfire, I think it'll be fine.domke13

And if it's 2 4870s? That I doubt.

He can get 2 4870, but not Corsair HX1000W?

I never sid he was. However, it might be an option sometime in the future.

[QUOTE="LightSoulBlue"]WAIT WAIT WAIT. Has anybody seen the post where he states that he has an AMD Athlon 2200? Intel CPUs are TOTALLY out of the question.
JP_Russell

He's saying he wants a motherboard to go with his current RAM and video card that he just bought and an E8400 that he'll buy along with the motherboard.

Missed that XD Either way, wouldn't such motherboards cost a premium since they're so hard to find?
