I know you can copy the actual game saves across, but if a game has been patched since launch, is it possible to carry that over or would I have to redownload all the patches as well?

Are you freaking kidding me? The first thing I do opening a game is smelling the inside of the case. Trust me, there's a fresh game smell every time.

Agreed.  And it may be weird but to me, Konami games have the best smell, and no I'm not kidding.

No breakdowns or anything. Assassins Creed froze it up when I rented it in April this year, but since then no problems whatsoever.
