so you are a music lover. what type of songs do you mostly listen to? do you like reggae?

Not really. I'd just play something melodic whilst I watch the world go by. Nothing specific. Just something soft so I could relax.

wow. that sounds great. who's your favorite artist anyway?

Trying to get however many hours you would normally sleep during the day is the most important part.

Pack a lunch and include a few somewhat healthy snacks. I either bring what I had for dinner or make a sandwich. For snacks during my shift I eat nuts, protein shakes, and fruit. Studies have shown that people crave unhealthy food when up late so this will help prevent you from eating junk.

For energy I buy caffeine pills at the nutrition store and take those as opposed to drinking energy drinks or coffee.

Also, if you can you should exercise at least 5 days a week. I hit the gym in the mornings after I get off from work.

Drink some juice, man. Vitamin C helps you stay awake and alert.

I'd recommend a glass of Grapefruit or Cranberry juice before leaving for work, or to take a jug with you. The stronger taste adds a little kick to keep you a bit on track.

(I work nights on weekends, and juice is my saving grace).

Well, Most of my tips takes place before the actual shift.

1) make sure to get some sun during dayhours somehow, This is quite important.

2) Be well rested beforehand, so you should (well duh) sleep during day hours.

3) Make sure you eat REALLY healtihly during times where you have a graveyard shift, it can be somewhat important that your diet is healthier then a normal day shift.

at the actual shift.

1) Try to always keep calm and find things to be happy/like about. Depressions are prone on graveyard shifts ( healthy food, sun, and own mental stability can keep it well at bay, so making sure all of those are kept up during day, will make graveyard shifts, have less impact). At the shift itself, it is somewhat important not to get stressed, and feel how your mental situation is.

2) Coffee is good ^^ but too much coffee is unhealthy, so drink a single cup or two. during the time IF you like coffee.

thank you so much. by the way, can you suggest some alternative for coffee?

[QUOTE="Zeviander"]Get a day shift. Seriously. Unless you can handle nights better than days, without any kind of stimulant (coffee, energy drinks, cocaine), then there is no way to be "healthy" while working a night shift. I did a month of nights in April-May and no matter how much sleep I got (sometimes 12-14 hours, which hasn't happened for 10 years) I still ended up being tired and feeling like sh!t. It's been almost two weeks since my last overnight, and I'm still not back at full energy. There is a reason why we are not biologically nocturnal animals.

thanks but I can't actually re-shift. It's the only schedule available.

Get black out curtains for your windows in your bedroom and keep them shut during the day. Sleep until about 2 hours before you need to be to work and eat a breakfast or get up a bit earlier and cook a dinner. Eat lunch halfway into your shift. Shower, eat a breakfast (or dinner) and relax then try to get at least 8 hours of sleep. If you go to bed shortly after you get home from work, do not eat as you will not have time for the food to digest. This is why it is imperative to keep a similar type schedule as you would if you worked during the day.

You didn't specify how many hours you will work a night, but if just 8 hours, it will not be hard to keep a healthy schedule. I typically work nights when I am on the road (though this year I have been rather lucky and worked more days than nights). In the US, you can work up to 16 hours depending on the employer or in my case, the client company that has hired my company for work (International Paper has a 16 hour maximum as well as Chevron and I almost maxed that out one night by 3 minutes).

XilePrincess, which oil patch up your way? Iv'e been to Suncor up north of Ft. McMurray and to Scotfield outside of Ft. Saskatchewan to inspect weld overlays on a couple of jobs there.

thanks. i am actually working for 8 hours. It's a great help.

[QUOTE="XilePrincess"]If you sleep all day and are up all night, remember that even though it's 2 AM you still need your regular meals. Carry out your night like you would the day. Doing it long enough will make you used to it. Also to the person asking if X hour shifts are legal, they are here, where I am. My boyfriend works in the oil patch and he and his dad have had 28 hour shifts before. His dad would work 72 straight hours and not sleep sometimes. They regularly run on 4 hours of sleep a night and they're really anal about safety there. Seems counterproductive to have your guys go for months on 4 hrs a night, crap food, and no days off and then lecture them about being safe. He makes a LOT of money doing it, but it's taxing.

thanks for that. i couldn't imagine how they managed to work in that manner.

I'll usually drink a few beers to calm me down. That usually relaxes me enough to fall asleep. I've become accustomed to running off of little sleep.

that's a good idea but will that not affect my health more?
