Team Fortress 2 is, to my mind, one of the best multiplayer FPS games for any player. It's also free to play now, which really makes it a no-brainer to at least check out.

If you play it and don't care for it, come back and tell us why - that will help us narrow down a more niche title based on your preferences.

We're obviously not going to reach our funding goal this time around - but anyone who supports the idea of the game should still back it (costs you nothing) to get in on the updates, and get early access to the design forums / alpha builds / original monster voting!

All that stuff will be available in the future, to our next round of backers - but for $0 you can get in on it now. Just FYI.

In my opinion, Civ 4 is probably the best PC game ever. Civ 5 is a fine game - I would be thrilled if I made a game that good. But it doesn't hold up to 5. If Civ is a bit too slow / bland, maybe look into Endless Space, which just released on Steam recently. It's a similar broad mechanic, but it's got awesome space-themed elements, and manages to compact things a fair amount. Some people complain about the combat resolution, but I like it just fine.

My understanding was that the game could not be played by anyone once they shut the servers down a couple years back. Hellgate required an "always on" internet connection, and without the servers you can't even play single-player. I haven't tried since they were shut down, so I'm not speaking from direct experience. But I recall it made quite a stink when it was announced.

I, for one, am very excited for this. I've had a hard time playing any of the BIoware games since Jade Empire - but I'll ABSOLUTELY be down for more Ultima. I can totally see Ultima X being done in the style of Fable.

So if people liked a Godzilla game they should totally back a game without Godzilla or any other monsters from those Godzilla games?

Just to make this clear, you're saying that people who liked a certain game should pay money for another game that has nothing they like in it?

Care to explain this stance?

I like the game Gears of War - and I liked the character of Marcus Fenix. If Epic made a similar game WITHOUT Marcus Fenix- I would probably still like it. If you liked gameplay of the Pipeworks-developed Godzilla games, then you will enjoy Kaiju Combat. It's the same engine & the same team making the game. Those other games were made to be Godzilla-specific, so Pipeworks could NOT make a similar game starring Ultraman, or Gamera, or King Kong. The goal of Kaiju Combat, however, is that it supports & can include EVERY monster franchise. (That includes the Toho monsters.) By supporting the creation of a game which builds upon the past Godzilla games, but which is not beholden to Godzilla alone, you get a much richer game world. One which can be expanded upon, giving you more and more monsters over time. Perhaps Jaysonguy won't agree with this logic, but I feel strongly that the vast majority of people who like the Pipeworks games WILL agree, and should support Kaiju Combat.

But the point of this game is to do it WITHOUT a publisher, so that the game is made high-quality. The biggest barrier right now, frankly, is people not backing the project because they are afraid that it won't meet its goal. Sort of the way people won't vote for a candidate if they don't think that candidate can win. Not everyone cared for the Godzilla games on the Gamecube, Xbox, Wii - but if you DID like those, then you should absolutely be backing Kaiju Combat. You have nothing to lose if it doesn't meet the goal, and showing support can only help it to find funding in other places.

I predict there will absolutely be a big flop of a game that was funded via Kickstarter, and that will pull back interest somewhat. Tim Schafer wants to make an adventure game? Sounds like a good investment. Wasteland 2? Well... I'd like to see it happen, but that's more of a gamble. Malevolence? Sounds like a pipe dream. Kaiju Combat absolutely falls closer to the "reasonable expectation" side in my opinion. They're basically promising to use the same tools & team to make a direct sequel to a game they've already created 4 or 5 times.

Who wants a publisher? Publishers have a terrible business model - from the perspective of developers: PUBLISHER MODEL: 1 - Loan a team $1M or so. Force them to produce a game that you think will appeal to folks not already buying your games. 2 - Spend $10M on marketing the game. 3 - Pay $2M to publish/produce/ship the game. 4 - Have retailers sell the game at a 40% markup over costs - so $35 of each sale goes back to the publisher. 5 - 20% of the publisher's profits get applied to the loan used to pay for initial development. If that gets paid off, then the developer actually gets some money from sales of the game. KICKSTARTER MODEL: 1 - Get fans to pre-order your game. 2 - Use that money to make exactly the game fans want. 3 - Every sale of the game is 100% profit for the studio - because development costs have already been paid! Publishers take almost all of the profit - but worse than that they spend a whole lot more money, which means more debt to be paid back, which means less profit overall. Not to mention the fact that publishers often greenlight games that nobody cares about, and ignore games that people really want. Using Kickstarter developers can bypass all that and just make the games people want.
