This was my saturday night.
I went to a birthday party at an old friends house and showed up early (5pm) to say happy b-day, then left for a couple hours and returned around 10:30pm. When I got back there were a couple people I didnt know, but of the 30-40 people there were only 5 I didn't know.
On my way out someone (named James, 6'2" 200-210# quite muscular) I don't know comes up to me and starts popping off. I make a sharp response back and have a good laugh with his 2 friends at his expense. I continue outside and he comes up to me again acting more aggressive and he starts to raise his voice. His friend (Tim) tells him to calm down and that he is acting like an jerk. James says, "you want to go? let's fight!" I decline the offer, but respond by saying, "I would be up for a wrestling match instead of a fight." He agrees and when he attacks I throw him into the grass and he lands on his face. He starts to rush me and his friends step in to get him to stop.
15 minutes later I'm inside and he comes up to me and says he wants a rematch. Again his friends are telling him it's a bad idea and our mutual friends are repeating the "this is a bad idea" mantra. He dismisses them and continues to demand the rematch (with the yelling and cussing in my face). I agree to it and this time on his way to the carpet he hits his head on some wooden chair leg (totally accidental). He starts getting in my face again and I tell him I'm going out back and his friends try to get him to stay inside. I walk away while he is yelling at me because I want to be outside if this whole situation breaks bad (or worse).
I get outside and sit next to Eric and we start smoking from his Hookah. James shows up a couple minutes later with his two friends in tow and starts asking me if I'm a MMA fighter and what would I do if he tackled me and started punching me in the face. I ask him to have a seat and calm down. He takes a seat, but doesn't get any calmer. Sitting seemed like a step in the right direction though. He continues calling me names and threatening to tackle me in the chair and break my face and after a couple minutes of that Eric stands up and tells him to quiet down (Eric is 6'1" 300# and built like a Bull). At that point I though James was starting to realize that he should cool it since nobody was on his side and he was still being the aggressor. That seems to sink in and his friends convince him to go back inside.
That is the gist of it. I eventually just decided that I was too old for that nonsense and got over it. There was a little more conversation with James as he was leaving, but I apologized to his friends and they said he does this all the time wherever he goes and they thanked me for not letting it escalate to a full on fist fight.
Oh today I was talking to Eric over IM because I couldn't pinpoint exactly what had started the whole thing, so I asked him for his take on the situation. This is what he said:
Nate: Did I miss out on anything? What were they doing before I got there?
Eric: Just Flagrant d-baggery from those three
Nate: so what do you think started the whole thing?
Eric: what i think happened was
Eric: These three d-bags showed up and one had already been drinking
Eric: he showed up and thought "I'm going to be the funny guy who people like"
Eric: Then when you got there
Eric: he realized YOU were the guy everybody likes
Eric: and the chalenger lion sizes up the dominant male
Eric: then you flipped him on his face
Nate: I still just don't get what was going on in his head...third times a charm?
Eric: you don't understand it because you are a dominant male, he is a challenger
