BTW, 2007 wasn't (obviously) as good as 2004, but it doesn't mean it was a joke. Now, 2009 was a year full of (bad) jokes in gaming.

However, 2004 is not alone here, these are the best years for gaming so far: 1998, 2004, 2007 & 2017 (but this is like my personal opinion, you know).

Alien: Isolation feels like a good game when you play it for the first time, though this title has very little replay value IMO (Replay value is one of the most important things that I take into account when buying games). I'd go for DI: Riptide Definitive Edition.

FPS games "miles" better than Half-Life? I'm not sure about that, but there's a number of games which are on a pair with HL series, such as: Unreal (this game was released a couple of months earlier than HL and featured impressive A.I. for its time), Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Dishonored, Medal of Honor Allied Assault, and Outlast series.

Yeah, I know, Outlast is not really an action game, but I regard this game as the "Half-Life" of the survival genre.
