If all you're seeing is the XMB background or a black screen... You need to hook up the AV cables that came with the playstation.

1) While the Playstation is turned off (red light on) Hold the reset button down for about 10 seconds. The PS will turn on and then beep 3 times and then turn back off.

2) Hold the reset button down again, it will turn on and beep 2 or 3 times, then a prompt should come up that says to connect your PS3 controller via USB cord and press the PS Button.

3) There should be a menu with 6 or 7 options and one of the last ones is "restore PS". Be warned, if you do this you will lose every save you have. You will keep your trophies since they are stored at PSN.

I'm not sure, but if you send your PS3 into Sony you will lose all your saves anyways. And they might even send you a new one. I don't even know why they don't tell you to do this when you call to say it's broken.

I did this to my PS3 a couple months ago and it has worked fine ever since. Before it broke I never turned mine off properly, I'd just hit the power switch at the back while a game was still running. (I could have cared less) Now I make sure to quit and turn off the system with the controller every time.

These steps should get you playing again before that box Sony sends you even shows up. :)

I am using the cables that came with the playstation. When I reset it nothing happens, just a black screen. Everything is plugged in the right place and I can tell because when I reset it there is a flicker on the screen. And I'm not sending my PS3 into Sony. It's going to who ever does repairs for Target.

Why are so many new games completely missing local play as a multiplayer component? Online play is fun but when I have some friends over it just doesn't cut it. System link? Yeah let me just get those spare consoles and TV's I got lying around.

Mass Effect has the better story and overall gameplay IMO. Fallout 3 does have a better combat system though. What systems do you have and what types of games do like to play (things that would help me in making a suggestion).

Ok well it seems I had a three year warranty so I filed a claim and they'll be sending me a prepaid thing to send it in. Sucks that I won't have it for a few weeks but I wasn't planning on bringing it with me to school anyway (too valuable; let them steal my 360 & Wii). Should I remove the hard drive before I send it in?

Your component cables will carry video only though red, blue, and green coded wires. Composite has the single video output which is yellow and two audio outputs which are white and red.

I have composite then. If the 60gb came with component cables, I will find them. Just out of curiosity though. Why would the composite cables just stop working all of a sudden?

You said you were using component.

caseystryker

Oh sorry. How do I tell if It's composite or component? I'm sorry I'm really tired right now so I know I'm making it harder to help me. I'm gonna go sleep soon and tomorrow I'll look for my other cables.

That depends, did you hook your system up using composite cables after you reset it back to default settings?

caseystryker

It was already hooked up with composite cables so yes.

The only thing I can suggest it trying to run it through an HDMI cord. Perhaps your AV output is faulty. Other than that all I can say is call Sony. It'll run you around $150, though.

caseystryker

No, don't do that....there's no point to paying $150 dollers to restore you PS3 when you ca do it on your own.

Good point. I just assumed he changed his connection back to component. If not, this is your problem. :)

HDMI isn't really an option for me because of my TV unfortunately.
