3. Since we are talking about this gen, only the RPGs that the PS2 received from 2005-present count. The 360 has MUCH more.

I'm bored and just wasting time till I get off work, so I did this out of curiosity. I omitted a few, so add 2 or 3 if you count the .hack series, and I didn't put the aciton-adventure type stuff like Marvel: Ultimate Alliance and Justice League Heroes. Also, I abided by the same criteria as the TC (including multiplat and unreleased games) and didn't add any titles from before Dec 10 2005 (when the 360 was released in Japan, already out in US/Canda/Europe).

1 Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4
2 AR Tonelico II
3 Devil Summoner (new one)
4 Monster Lab
5 Shin MEgami Tensei: Persona 3
6 Baroque
7 Mana Khemia: ALchemists of AL-Revis
8 Growlanser: Heritage of War
9 Wild ARMs 5
10 Atelier Iris 3: Grand Phantasm
11 Odin Sphere
12 Shining Force Exa
13 AR Tonelico: Melody of Eternia
14 Rogue Galaxy
15 Final Fantasy XII
16 Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner
17 Tales of the Abyss
18 Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria
19 Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories
20 Xenosaga Episode III
21 Steambot Chronicles
22 Metal Saga
23 Atelier Iris 2: The Azoth of Destiny
24 Kingdom Hearts II
25 Suikoden V
26 SHadow Hearts: From the NEw World
27 MS Saga: A New Dawn
28 Grandia III
29 Drakengard 2
30 Tales of Legendia
31 Wild Arms 4
32 Eternal Poison (newly announced Atlus title)

Just to add some fanboy teh bias controversy, this review is from the same guy who slammed Pixel Junk Eden. Discuss.CronoSquall

I'm still annoyed with him for giving LostWinds a 5.5 :(

Oh, and in before ignorance spawns a "Wii is not 'next-gen'" comment

Is not next-gen, neither are the Ps3 and 360.

Er yeah, I should've edited that. I usually say current gen, but since the TC said "next-gen" I went along with it. Either way, I'm sure ignorance will find its way here to bash the Wii for not being current gen.

360 - October 2007

PS3 - Got the MGS4 Bundle when it launched, so June 2008

Also got my DS around a year and a half ago, wanting ti pick up a PSP and upgrade my PC eventually

Oh, and in before ignorance spawns a "Wii is not current/'next-gen'" comment

GC: Other than what's been said, it has to be Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. Easily one of the best games I've played in a long while.

PS2: Anything Shin Megami Tensei for RPG fans. Devil Summoner, Digital Devil Saga 1/2, and Nocturne, all great.

For Xbox: Call of Cthulu. I know Eternal Darkness is Lovecraft based too, but both games are just so freaky and incredibly fun.

Random encounters aren't inherently bad. Perhaps in earlier RPGs they can be just because they have a ridiculously high percentage, like it often seemed in the GBA port of Final Fantasy V. They did get better with it in the later Final Fantasies, including stuff like No Encounter customizations in FFX, though other RPGs still suffer from it.

If pressed, I'd say one of my favorite RPG wys of enemy ecounters is in Chrono Trigger. The enemies aren't pursuing you like in an MMO (or FFXII) but you can choose to fight them or skip them. They also add some forced ones, which makes you get at least a little experience.
