@last_lap: oof, I didn't realize that the sales gap was that big. Out of curiosity I tried to look up how profitable the Kinect and PSVR was; I couldn't find good numbers for the Kinect, but an article from thr end of 2019 estimated $1.5 billion from the headset sales alone, and $1.9 billion in game sales (sold nearly 22 million games for it at end of 2019 and was still going). No wonder Sony wanted to continue with the PSVR2.

From what I was seeing, outside of a few music and sports games the games for the Kinect did not do good at all. And the Kinect for the Xbox One hurt the console more than anything, so I can see why you say ot is bad for gaming, but why would PSVR be bad? From what others here are complaining about it doesn't seem like Sony is "wasting" the talents of their best studios on VR and they are not spending much on marketing. So if third party companies can make fun, unique, successful games that consumers enjoy what is the harm?

@last_lap: you are right about gimmicks not having lasting power, that is why the Kinect did not last long and had so little game support despite the high initial sales. PSVR had games made for it all the way till PSVR2 release.

I bet Sony made more money on PSVR than Microsoft did from Kinect if you combine the profit from higher hardware price, accessories, and game sales.

@Pedro: It is not uncommon for VR enthusiasts to spend over $1000 for a headset alone. VR gaming is an expensive hobby. At least with this option you also get a solid console and access to Sony exclusives.

I think the fact that PSVR2 has not gone to PC proves that Sony hasn't given up or abandoned VR. They are keeping the headset and games exclusive to the PS5 to entice PC and standalone headset users to go over to the Sony ecosystem. They are playing the long game.

I do still plan on getting a PSVR2, but due to lack of time and money it may be a while till that happens.

@Archangel3371: I assume all the people buying Diablo IV is the equivalent to all the people hate-watching the Velma TV show :P

I voted no. Was debating between no or maybe, but ultimately decided that it is Sony's right to embrace whatever policy which can (and likely would) change when deemed unprofitable.

I was also turned away from the yes option stating that it hurts gamers; which feels to me like a sense of entitlement, like gamers "deserve" to play any game on any system. Don't get me wrong, I like that idea, but I also like when developers are able to focus on a clear, concise version of their game that fully utilizes the platform it is made for. Nintendo does this well, and I think it helps promote new system specific ideas that separates them from their competitors and advances gaming.

@sealionact: I understand that the PSVR2 has a small install base (which I do place most of the blame on Sony for their poor marketing), but it still adds so much to the PS5 library that is not available on other consoles. I don't think any PSVR2 owner would be saying that they are in a gaming drought.

@Antwan3K: I think you (and some others here) are glamorizing past years and forgetting the slow times that frequently happen; it seems like there is at least one claim of gaming droughts each year. And yes, a 10 month drought has not happened before... Unless you exclude games like you are doing now.

@sealionact: odd to just discount VR like that. Would you say that any game that requires a peripheral is not a game on that platform?

I'm going to still be counting PSVR2 games. According to Wikipedia, it looks like this year will have 6 Sony games similar to last year (excluding all the PS Classics games). There is 2 PSVR2 listed for this year, if you don't want to count them I would argue that you shouldn't count the 2 remakes/remasters from last year.

@sealionact: I thought this was about a drought in PS5 games in general, or at least games exclusive to PS5 and the PSVR2 library would be a big argument against that claim. I thought you bringing up Sony first-party games was a little irrelevant but I guess not.

My point bringing up those games was to prove your statement was false. Excluding past remakes/remasters, this year so far is similar to prior years, maybe one title less.

@sealionact: ... But PSVR2 games are PS5 games, so I don't know how you can't say it is output for the console.

Sony has released games this year: Horizon Call of the Mountain, and MLB the Show (yes, I know it's multiplatform but it is still a Sony game).
