Well, what genre defining games did we witness last gen, that were original IP's.. Just curious..

OhSnapitz

Soul Calibur. Cant argue with a universal 10.

Tech Romancer (a very popular DC fighter, scored highly),

Power Stone,

Fight Night,

Dragonball Z: Budokai 3 (its far and beyond any other anime game and ranks with competitive fighters. Budokai series was new last gen).

Arcana Heart series.

Thats all i can think of at this moment and the only genre defining game there is Soul Calibur. But still, id say a solid list of new IPs, all great games. Last gen however was the start of the genre decline.

]Don't call it a comeback?

Wrong.

A comeback usually indicates that something has become popular again. It has nothing to do with the amount of original material being generated.People are buying fighting games again and from the looks of the new titles like Marvel vs Capcom, the new Mortal Combat and Capcom vs Tekken they will be drawing in new fans and (people like me) that have completely given up on the genre all together. That is definitely worth of comeback status.

heretrix

No not really. As i said, last gen we got Virtua Fighter 4, Street Fighter 3, Capcom, vs SNK 2, SNK vs Capcom 2, Marvel vs Capcom 2, Dead or Alive, 2/3/U, Mortal Kombat (3 games), Tekken tag/4/5, Soul Calibur 1/2/3, more + all the new IPs i listed in the above post.

Now how can there be a come back when output has significantly decreased? I think what you're confusing a comeback with is a cluster, theres just a few games releasing/announced in a short period of time right now. I guess you could make a point saying its a comeback from early in this gen, but that'd be pointless.

You havent really been drawn in too. Theres just less competition now which allows you to focus on specific titles.

MvC3 didn't. It had a "re-release" of MvC2, but the original was released on the Dreamcast.

Which is a last-gen console :|

Definately not.

A genre comeback is usually identified by the amount of new IPs released. This gen theres only been 2. Yep, the whole 5 years of this gen, theres only been to new fighter IPs, one which is great and the other average (Blazblue and Battle Fantasia).

EDIT: All those games had prequals last gen.

Im not liking the direction next-gen handhelds are going at.

charizard1605

Why, what's wrong with it?

Doesnt feel like handheld gaming.

I know alot of people just want their console games portable but to me thats not handheld gaming. It offered a distinct counterpart from console gaming, experiences that couldnt be found elsewhere. Now, i just dont see any reason to pick this up when i can get SSFIV for consoles. And its not just this, im sure when i play the other games ill just wish it was on console. Something that happened to me and my PSP. And then when Wii 2 launches (along with the other consoles) bringing 3D gaming etc. A handheld seems pretty pointless if it isnt offering anything different from consoles. Im not talking about exclusive games, but exclusive experiences.

All is not lost, as it seems Wiiware/PSN/XBLA have taken that stance.

I REALLY love the idea that gamers like that theyve considered games like something to happen the instant they press the button. Its something few devs realise. Platinum games have which is why you see some people think the game has janky animations when really, its just playing like how a game should. Ive nearly finished DMC4 and i really dislike all the extra animations incorporated into it. DMC1 and 3 were fast fluid, as soon as you get knocked down then you bounce back up and are fighting again. Where as DMC4, theres a 2-3 second wait as dante/nero finishes their slide and footing animation.

Kudos to Nintendo/Team Ninja.

I want this to succeed "even though i don't own a wii" but i feel its not going to sell, just think its going to come and go "come on mickey make a come back"

Chris_Williams

I think its success depends on how close it releases to Donkey Kong Country Returns. Because me and im sure many others will buy that first and Epic Mickey later. And we all know devs like to judge games on day 1 sales.

I find it strange, ive never played Twisted Metal (or even seen a gameplay video for that matter) but really love the TM universe. It looks like it has great personailities. I think Sweet Tooth is one of the best characters in gaming. Damn, i should have put him on my top 5 badass list.

This should have happened before every other SF game released this gen.

I just cant play any SF game online. Doesnt feel right.

Ive got my DC set up now so theres no need for me to get this.
