well, wow is pretty much a single player RPG

Have you ever played World of Warcraft. Because you couldn't be more wrong there.
For years actually, but unlike you, I actually also play other MMORPGs and look into them. A game world where literally NOTHING is progressed via player actions... well that's actually worse then a single player RPG. WoW currently is just a glorified social networt game. Blizzard has gone out of their way to make sure that players can do nothing to affect their game world, wasn't always like this of course... e.g. AQ opening where a server had to work together.
Just look at the DK starting area, a complete single player experience. The phasing used makes sure that every time you go onto a new quest you would change instances so that you would be blocked off from MORE people.
They have made sure that leveling is a complete single player experience.
Just look at the PVP and PVE system now, it isn't about team work anymore, it is about a group of random people you will NEVER meet again coming together for mutual benefit to grind for points/tokens for more (ultimately useless) gear. Hey! Who needs to make friends in games! At least it is faster to find groups so we can grind more badges!
There is no community in WoW anymore, Blizzard has made sure of that. MMORPGs are based on the actions of the community. In WoW you cannot make friends (hence why the community in WoW is so anti-social, a main reason is because the game itself is anti-social), now you have to play with your existing friends, because there is not gameplay that is based around making friends within game itself (pretty much, gameplay that forced you to make friends).
The next expansion is completely based on this philosopy, no one chooses if, how or when the game completely changes... It just happens because Blizzard chooses to make it so.
So obviously WoW has been the ONLY MMORPG you have played, otherwise you'd know what a real MMORPG was.
