To say who's won E3 is kind of a understatement, because it proved two things.
1 - Motion control is the new boob physics (according to N'Gai Croal)
2 - E3 is back, and with a vengence.
All three put in a decent showing at best, two of them had probably the finest conferences shown this generation. But who really won E3? Well, to break it down, I'm gonna compare all 3 plaform holders from their performances to last year.
First up, Nintendo:
2008: E3 2008 was... not the best of years for Nintendo. We had hell on earth basically in the form of Cammie Dunaway, too embarrasing for anybody to be around with during a conference. Plus, a cheesy demo involving Shaun White Snowboarding, chart after chart after chart, plus more prepherals like WiiSpeak, more casual games like Animal Crossing and stuff like Wii Music (who could forget Ravi Roll?), but no hardcore stuff for the Wii.
The same also for the DS, bar one major difference: Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars was announced at that same conference. Plus, a cringe worthy performance of Wii Music, involving Miyamoto and co.
Simply put, if you were a hardcore gamer, who owned the Wii, chances are you might have sold your Wii that same day.
2008 rating: 4/10
2009: 2009 still held the same for Nintendo, but they did substantually imrprove from last year and 2007 to add to that. On the Wii side, it was still about casual with a new Wii Fit and Wii Sport Resort, along with Wii Motion Plus, both revealed at last year's E3.
And on the DS, casual game after casual game for the DS for girls. However, near the end, the hardcore got their wish: more hardcore games. Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Metroid: Other M announced as the hardcore got their promise at last of more hardcore stuff.
And for DS, Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days for September 27th, plus more
2009 impressions: Overall, Nintendo were still off the mark, but they did improve alot over the past year, so credit is due for them. A solid perforamce from Nintendo, but they still need to improve.
2009 rating: 7/10
Microsoft:
2008: 2008 was a good conference for Microsoft, with live demos of Fallout 3, Resident Evil 5, Fable II and Gears of War 2 along with NXE and Avatars, plus several new Xbox Live Arcade titles announced like Portal: Still Alive. And then it went downhill with You're in the Movies.
But just as it was abut to end on an whimper, even after the music segment which had Duffy, Rock Band 2 and Guitar Hero: World Tour, the Square Enix president, Yoichi Wada showed off 3 brand new games for the 360 including Star Ocean: The Last Hope, Uninfinite Discovey and The Last Remnant, followed then up by what was the biggest announcement in E3 history, Final Fantasy XIII would be coming to Xbox 360, no longer a PS3 exclusive.
2008 rating: 9/10
2009: To say it improved from last year would be a big understatement. They had big announcement after big announcement, along with epic live demos. Demos like Forza 3, Alan Wake, Final Fantasy XIII, Modern Warfare 2, Splinter Cell: Conviction and The Beatles: Rock Band (with Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney to boot), plus game reveals like Forza 3, Halo: Reach only to name a few.
But the biggest reveal of the night came in the form of Hideo Kojima showing up at the conference to announce that MGS would be showing its rear for the first time on the Xbox 360, followed by a teaser trailer for Metal Gear Solid: Rising.
But even then, the biggest announcement was kept for the end of the night with Project Natal. A 2010 release, Lionhead's newest game involves it, it really was something to low and behold as we looked at something very revolutionary in the making involving Natal.
All the games can be traded in the world, but nothing beats awesome and innovation like Natal did on Monday. Plus, Facebook and Twitter for XBL. We love them.
2009 rating: 10/10
Sony:
2008: Sony had a decent conference, but somewhat lacklustre. It was missing something, tht va-va-voom. Maybe the MS conference the previous day took it out of them, but it felt kinda empty, even with demos of LittleBigPlanet and Resistance 2. Plus, reveals of Resistance: Retrobution, the re-emergence of inFamous, the reveal of God of War III and the debut of MAG, which I thought would never work.
256 players? LAAAG! It was set up well and playedo ut okay, but nothing on MS.
2008 rating: 8/10
2009: But Sony improved on 08, not marginally, not substantially, but incredibly. A great demo of Uncharted 2, the first showing of MAG, plus reveals of PSP Go! which will release for October 1st 2009 as well as upcoming PSP games, like Gran Turismo and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walkers.
But it was near the end of it's conference when it picked it's time to strike. First, an awesome Final Fantasy XIII trailer in English, the first time Assassins Creed 2 was been shown when, out of nowhere, comes megaton after megaton. First, the shock announcement of Final Fantasy XIV, even as an MMO, out next year exclusive to PLAYSTATION 3, soon before Final Fantasy XIII is even out.
Megaton #2 was The Last Guardian, the new Team ICO game which was revealed to everyone at last. Needless to say, I felt like I wanted to jump and down when I seen it, it was just that special.
Megaton #3 was the announcement of Rockstar's exclusive PS3 game - Agent.
Megaton #4, and the final one, the Gran Turismo 5 teaser which looked spectacular. Damage, WRC, NASCAR in it. Plus, kickass demos of MAG, Uncharted 2, Assassins Creed 2, GT PSP and God of War III which looked stunning. Oh, and plus, the PlayStation Motion Controller. In the end, a supurb showing.
2009 rating: 10/10
Winner: Not Nintendo anyways. It'd be cruel to pick a winner from these two, and to call it a draw would be an anti-climax. Nintendo did very well this year compared to last year or 07, but Microsoft and Sony ruled with an iron fist this week, but which was better?
They both were, I cant decide which one was better, both blew my heads away. So, to be fair:
On the technical side alone, with Project Natal which looks stunning and could have the potential to get this right, Microsoft. But on the software side, Sony won. Team ICO, God of War III, MAG, Uncharted 2 and Assassins Creed 2 were just great examples of how great the Sony is.
Overall winner: tied (due to not being inable to vote)
Technology: Microsoft (reason: Project Natal
Gaming Software: Sony (just on Team ICO and FF XIV).
