What people have issues with are day-1 DLCs you have to pay extra for. That is just bad business practice from a consumer perspective whichever way you look at it.
Just like the article described, I never saw the appeal of the game from a production standpoint. It's being made by ILM, which didn't make sense to begin with because they're a film studio. And the only gameplay footage we ever got was a hi-fidelity uncharted gameplay video with star wars wrapped around it. There wasn't going to be any innovation in terms of design, and it was only there to look pretty. That just spelled disaster.
Indeed its a shame the story in SC2 so far is terrible. But on the flip side, it makes a lot of sense Blizzard chose to focus a lot more on the multiplayer instead of single player.
I think people just hate esports by default because they don't understand it. When it gets to a really epic game between two incredibly skilled players, nothing beats the excitement of watching it live.
I think people who want to get into the industry have to know what they're getting into in order to do this. But the reward is the experience itself, which is more meaningful than just the pay, which is still good. There are examples like Rockstar games where people are always crunching. However after the development and employees look back at it, they can proudly say things like 'I made grand theft auto', how awesome is that?
But I still think games industry is still not as bad as films, for example, the vfx debacle that happened last night.
If its stuff like child soldiers and holocaust-like treatment of people, the story have to really present the theme meaningfully. But at the end of the day kojima can release another tic-tac-toe game for 60 bucks and I'll still buy it.
