Or it could be as simple as you need to clean your heat sink and your fan on your CPU.

celsius :(

mushroom_kid

Sounds like you need to

1. Reapply thermal paste

2. Get a new heat sink for your CPU

3. Get a new case, like the Antec 900 for cooling.

4. If you don't want a new case, get water cooling or get more fans for air flow.

5. Get those wires out of the way so air can flow!

I get the point but just something that will last a couple or few years. So when would a PCI-E and DDR2 start lagging me to death? 2 years?

nightwraith40k

PCI-E will be good for at least another 1-2 years, as NO card out right now has used the full band-width of even PCI-E 1.0, PCI-E 2.0 is a gimmick. I am pretty sure the 9800 GX2 doesn't even use the full PCI-E 1.0 band-width.

Ram will not make or break a system, get the best DDR2 you can get right now, 4 gigs of it and you're set for 1.5 years or longer if you don't really care.

Not in the sense for CPU but for Video cards and RAM

But what is that about chipsets? So should I wait til next year to get a computer? If I want it futureproofed?

nightwraith40k

New GPUs come out this month, new CPU next year, ram has DDR3 out now, motherboards all supporting quad SLI, PCI-E 2.0, 15,000 RPM Hard drives.

Future proofing probably will cost your more than just upgrading every year.

Future proof is impossible, no matter how good of specs you get. Future proofing = you overclocking everything to the max until everything melts or stops working, thats when you buy a new pc/parts.

Isn't a new build, already got my hard drives with vista on them. Just going to yank them from this computer, and put them on the new one.

SinfulPotato

That could be a problem... YOu have vista on a harddrive already. Was this copy of vista OEM or retail.. if it was OEM you need the EXACT same motherboard.. If you get a new board that is not the exact same you MIGHT be able to trick some dumb microsoft rep into reactivating your OEM windows.

Sometimes you don't have to reactivate if you buy a new board with the same chipsets.

OEM, HP computer =\. Do I need to buy vista too then :(?

In that case yes.. Companys such as HP, Dell, and Gateway have their OS's tied to there motherboards... Not bones about that.

YOu can buy Vista Home or Home permium OEM for 90 bucks from newegg.

Don't those require special licenses to use? Or are those the builders OEMs? Not really sure =\.

"DFI - 1333mhz and 1066mhz." That does not tell me much, I would amaginit would, but please link the page to the board. Its always best to know what your buying inside and out. I like to go to the manufacures website and look at the "supported CPUs"... I don't know much about DFI, I know Gigabyte posts all the supported CPUs.. and add more CPU support with bios updates.

I know Gigabyte won't give you support if you use a unsported CPU, and motherboard support in VERY important... Try getting a new board with a OEM copy of windows... dreaded reactivation phone call with a idiot on the other side.
