[QUOTE="RBerry82"][QUOTE="mattbbpl"] I dislike the burgeoning defense budget as much as anyone, but those numbers are skewed as the federal government only contributes about 10.5% of the total educational expenses. mattbbplYeah I was going to say something about that; most of the money for public education comes from local and state taxes. However, it isn't enough to meet all the needs of students who have been victim to parental neglect; it would definitely help if the federal assistance was at least double what it is now. I don't personally think that doubling educational funds will help the problem all that much. I believe it's more societal than governmental. You cannot force an individual to learn. They need to want to learn. And, frankly, I see a lot of people who place little to no value in education at all. That is indeed another problem. Kids see people becoming rich and famous overnight in music and on reality tv, and they think that's how real-life works and anyone can do it. There definitely needs to be something in the school curriculum on teaching fantasy vs reality.
[QUOTE="RBerry82"][QUOTE="MgamerBD"]I'm currently studying for the Asvab right now so this is very intriguing. I am really glad of my decision. *goes back to studying harder*MgamerBDIt's a test of basic academic skills. If you paid attention in class, it's easy. I don't know why someone would need to "study" for it. The asvab is a test to figure out what your skills are and decide your MOS. Just like studying for the SAT. Same concept, same difference. Look it up before you dare quote and correct me. I know what it is, I took the damn thing when I was 17 and made a 90 (out of a possible 99 points) on it without even trying. It was 100x easier than that SAT or ACT. And afterward I couldn't get the navy recruiters to stop calling me trying to recruit me into their nuke program, something about maintaining the nuclear reactors on carriers and subs.
[QUOTE="chrisrooR"][QUOTE="RBerry82"]I read a couple of years back that our military's budget is as high as the next top 20 countries combined. If we were to take some of that and spend it on education, it might make a difference. Public schools need a lot more support specialists in reading and math, especially at the elementary level. Kids need a good solid foundation from the start. In Texas, we're going to be losing about half our support specialists to layoffs this summer when in reality we need more of them.mattbbplBudget for the U.S. Department of Defense : US$688 billion (2010) Budget for the U.S. Department of Education : US$56 billion (2010) I dislike the burgeoning defense budget as much as anyone, but those numbers are skewed as the federal government only contributes about 10.5% of the total educational expenses. or maybe its because half the people that try to join the military are complete **** upsspliffstar12Sad but true. There intelligent, ambitious individuals that join the military, but most of them are college grads going into the officer program.

Unfortunately, schools are judged by their dropout rate, so they feel like they have to lower the standards for passing or else they get lynched for having a high dropout rate. Sure, it's the fault of the kids for not doing the work and not showing up, and then the parents' fault for lying about why their kids are absent, but the general population won't see it that way.The overall program of certification and acheievement for high schoolis ass. That is why post secondaryschool grads trying to enter the military are failing. Not teachers nessecarily but in partial them. Why is the school board passing students who don't knoweven have half of the requirement? I mean wtf is it possible students with 50 av in high school are being just passes by teches? That is definitely a possibility. Regardless students have a formal role but i'm saying if they are that underskilled at subjects then hold them back until they understand it, otherwie you are going to get alot of results like this one study.
