Excellent video as always! I think there definitely is an over saturation of zombies, but I don't think that necessarily means it needs to stop. Games like The Last of Us show us that we can expand upon the infected/zombies we're so familiar with. Take advantage of the uncanny valley and turn it into something other than the usual. To this day I'm terrified of aliens because of the uncanny.
I often play games I do not particularly like that my friends get me into. I've thrown around so many recommendations and invitations that I know what it's like to not have somebody willing to play. So much in fact that I've dedicated myself to not doing the same to others. What I play is often no longer dictated by what I want to play, but what my friends are playing. If I ask them to play something like Dark Souls they say "sure" but never actually follow through, but if they ask me to jump onto Payday I don't hesitate even though the game is gruelingly boring to me. Aside from the multiplayer aspect though, I force myself to play through several games for many reasons. For one it's to experience everything out there, the good and the bad, for research purposes. Secondly, some things take a lot of exposure to really enjoy and this is true for a lot of things including food. For example, Gran Turismo 5 and Metal Gear Solid 2 frustrated the hell out of me and I did not enjoy playing them, but after taking several breaks and coming back they became some of my favorite franchises. When a game is critically acclaimed I'm deadset on playing it to the end(unless it's multiplayer driven) and understand the mindset one needs to enjoy the game. Because I've pushed myself to play games I normally wouldn't have my tastes have strongly diversified, but at the same time one could argue that I've turned video games into work rather than a hobby.
I may not agree with the choice, but all these nominations are popularity contests and not always indication of quality. Although I'm surprised how well the games were picked out. I'm just disappointed in the lack of Dark Souls of Demon's Souls, but then again it's all opinion. Skyrim is a great game though and I congratulate Bethesda on such an accomplishment.
Oh my gosh, a bunch of EA employees do something charitable and everyone still find a way to twist it into something evil. Disagree with their policies if you may, but do you really think that EA is purely run by these devilish figures we seem to imagine in our heads. Is it not run by human beings capable of emotions? Consumerism can be quite disgusting at times.
I was severely disappointed by the lack of character development in Lara as well as those around her. When I got hyped about this game I was expecting something very survival based, but instead I got a game focused on action. Maybe I'm expecting too much after playing The Last of Us, but I wanted the challenge of survival as well as a story to match that. That said I enjoyed the game, but it wasn't the game I felt was advertised to me.
Great video Gamespot! I've been really enjoying this new Reality Check series. This one hit particularly close to home because of the massive collection I have saved up across all my consoles. I'm not a picky person and hate to miss out on anything so I practically buy every highly acclaimed game out there. Selling my games has never been my thing because quite honestly they don't give you enough to consider parting with it. Not just that, but another reason for my collecting is the ability to allow friends and family to play any game they want and even entice them to buy a copy for themselves.
More importantly though, I'm glad it was pointed out that multiple things competing for your attention can cause frustration. This is exactly my dilemma right now and knowing that brings me a step closer to resolving it. Lately friends and video games have been a combined force grabbing for my attention that leaves me unusually exhausted. Sitting down alone and playing a single player game has never felt so relaxing.
Come on Tom, you can do better than this. It's not even the score that bothers me, but rather the lack of depth in this review. I've always appreciated your reviews and agreed with all of them thus far, but I would've loved a more in-depth review to really support why you believe this game deserves a 8.0. Aside from my little complaint though, keep up the good work and don't let the hate drag you down Tom. You really know how to look past the face-value of a game and that makes you a unique gem among critics.
I've been playing this game for 8 years and still love it. Glad to know they're still giving out free expansions and updates. Not many game companies do that anymore.
Because Nintendo offers such compelling storylines that Youtube videos spoil to the point where I have no need to experience the gameplay. Honestly EA or Sony should be more pissed about this considering their games have more of that movie feel. There are actually quite a few games I bought after watching Youtube videos. Sorry Nintendo, but this might be the kind of stunt that knocks you out of the race for good.
