It is possible for a overclocked 8600gt to surpass a stock 8600gts, if you use volt mods on both gt and gts they max out at the same level. shader speeds can also be overclocked on the gt past stock gts speed.http://xtreview.com/review203.htm
try reseating the cpu heatsink, and push every thing in tight (cables,ram,cards)other than that maybe the hard drive is broken. formating might maybe get it running again.
