Reminds me of The Last Samurai. An American-made production about Feudal Japan that was very well-received in Japan, but not quite as well-received in the West.
The success of Tsushima in Japan also coincides with the record-breaking success of the Demon Slayer manga/anime franchise in Japan. There's been a major revival of Japanese interest in pre-modern Japanese settings, so Tsushima came along at just the right time. But then again, it could just be part of a wider global revival, with Feudal Japan games like Nioh, Sekiro and Tsushima just as successful in the West.
I'm pretty Demon Slayer is supposed to take place in the Meiji or Taisho Era (I do get your point though).
