So someone decided to...

Go through my list of game reviews and mark every single one I reviewed as negative. Some really petty spiteful people out there. And I hope you read this and it makes you feel all high and mighty. You certainly showed me.

Games of 2009 - A retrospecticus

Wait, retrospecticus isn't a real word. I think I heard it on the Simpsons.

Anyways, this is all about 2009 in review in my opinion. Let's go with the worst games I've played this year.

Flat Out Worst :

Normally D3 makes a lot of bargain/B movie games. This is more like a D- movie game. See, hot chicks, zombies and violence = good time most of the time. Sure its mindless fun for a few levels, but the game is ultra repetetive to the point of tears, and even worse, you have to go into some "blood rage" thing in order to progress by killing these blood demons. Problem = your life slowly drains, and you will almost surely die before you can complete the level in this state. That itself is my biggest problem. Not the repetition, not the bland backgrounds or screen tearing. Not even the fact that there is a character named "Annna". That is not a typo. It appears in game AND in the achievements.

Most Frustrating Game :

Wet with it's stupid need to insert platforming into a Third Person Action Adventure almost took it. No. Modern Warfare 2 wins hands down. Perks and leveling = ruining the game for any newbie to multiplayer. I am sick of people with Thermal Scopes and Heartbeat Sensors killing me before I run around the corner. This game punishes new players and rewards those who have been playing forever by not only being a discrepancy in skill/experience but equipment.

This is why Unreal Tournament and Halo and other FPSes will always be superior in my opinion. Starting with superior weapons in a competetive game is a poor design choice, even if it is a "reward".

Biggest Ripoff :

Do you know who this idiot is? Do you know what game he is from?

Levi Dryden from Dragon Age. Not only is the PC version of this game superior, it does not require you to pay for a download that you need to complete the achievements/trophies for this game, and this guy is the swindler. This material was clearly ready for release prior to shipping, but no, console players have to PAY to get what should be free material.

**** you very much Electronic Arts.

Now for more happy stuff.

Best Fighting Game :

The same old awesome Tekken gameplay, but with better graphics, more characters (who aren't carbon copies of each other, Lili, Bob and Alisa are awesome, and the Mishima lineage all play very differently). And the customization of each character is awesome, makes your fighters unique online. Also, I am no longer a platinum trophy virgin thanks to this game.

Best FPS :

Face it, no one makes as intense and immersive of a game with massive setpieces as Infinity Ward. The single player campaign is just awesome and makes me want to see how it concludes. The spec ops cooperative gameplay is tremendous fun. My brother is asking me when the 3rd game comes out, he's pretty much a casual gamer but is inlove with the single player and spec ops. As am I.

Best RPG

In a year of merely good RPGs like Star Ocean 4 for instance, Dragon Age was the only great RPG. That isn't to say it was awesome on the scope of Mass Effect or Knights of the Old Republic. It had a lot of stupid AI, some inconsistent difficulty, and as I said before, the worst ripoff of gaming this year with the necessary DLC for getting all achievements and trophies.

Best Action Game :

I used to love Resident Evil, 1 2 3 zero and then 4 was like someone pissed all over the series. Somehow 5 manages to recapture the spark in the series. Although there are very few "shocks" like the Nemesis or Dogs busting through walls and windows, the game has a lot of tense moments and is satisfying blowing heads off and satellite nuking giant tentacle monsters from the sky. Oh yes, the Coop makes this game.

Favorite Game of the Year :

'

"Ain't no rest for the wicked, money don't grow on trees, got bills to pay, got mouths to feed" - Cage the Elephant

I give this game the now annual "Valkyria Chronicles Award for Excellence in Originality". I mean it takes the dungeon crawler and melds it with a first person shooter with coop. And it works. From the denizens of New Haven and Fyrestone to the weirdos you fight out on Pandora to the music and playable characters quips, this game is my favorite game over the year. 4 player coop = magical times. My only hope is they release some more intense end game situations.

It's been a while

What with the end of the summer and karate tests and research presentations and all that I've been busy.

So here's the salient points:

I recently earned my green belt, and my Karate is officially one year old as of this week.

I also went here...

Hampton Beach New Hampshire. Our hotel was the Ashworth by the Sea and we had two TVs in the room, a huge main street view of the whole beach and boardwalk and a giant deck to walk out on. Best thing of all was that we were less than 100 feet from the beach shore, and there was a fireworks display right in front of our room across the road. 1 football field separated us from the most intimate and best fireworks I've ever seen, and I've seen some of the best in the world.

I am going to see this man :

Live in concert here at UMass at the Mullins Center on Oct 25th. Cannot wait for that. His new album is amazing by the way.

My gaming life has consisted of :

Yes, I know IGN = 6.6

The demo made me want to have this game. Mostly because I like running into some guy and running up his chest and back flipping while planting bullets in his face in slow mo. Most Demos turn me off. This turned me on... that didn't come out right.

Best thing to happen to Batman besides the Dark Knight.

For a game that I couldn't get into at the start, I'm 50+ hours in and am enjoying it now... don't know why.

And yes, Halo 3 ODST is already prepaid.

Anyways, I've been so busy with work that I haven't had time to post regularly. And now its time to get back to the grind.

What does this picture say to you?

This picture was taken at approximately 9:30 on July 4th 2009 on 34 Street facing the Hudson River in New York City.

I want to hear what is most striking about it from you guys before I add my two cents to the equation, so check back tomorrow after you've given me your answers.

Answers to Quiz 2 (Don't click if you still want to take the quiz)

The site won't let me use spoilers for some reason.

Easy:

********************************************************************************************

********************************************************************************************

1.) Tyris Flare is the amazon from Golden Axe

2.) BFG is indeed from Doom. Stands for Big ****ing Gun. Also appears in Quake.

3.) Solid Snake is a composite of Kyle Reese (Younger Snake from the non Solid Metal Gears) from Terminator and Snake Plisken from Escape from New York, down to the smoking, the mullet, the eye patch everything.

4.) Ineed, Megaman's name is actually Rock, and his "sister" is named Roll.

5.) Pit is the hero of Kid Icarus, in the same way that Link is the hero of The Legend of Zelda

**********************************************************************************

Medium :

1.) Malcom (or Malcolm) is the champion of the Liandri tournament in Unreal. Hence the clue.

2.) Psycho Power.

3.) Pretty much everyone got it right in one form. The characters are X Wing pilots in Star Wars. Only Wedge (Antilles) goes on to live through the Battle of Yavin. These three characters appear in pretty much every Final Fantasy after 4, Chrono Trigger and a few other Square games.

4.) 343 Guilty Spark is possibly the most annoying character in a game you want to blow up but can't until 2 sequels later.

5.) Pichu, Pikachu, and Raichu are the three evolutions of the electric rat in pokemon.

*****************************************************************************

Hard:

1.) The Papillion Heart is Aigis' processor/brain. She removes the covering and asks the MC to touch it and "Contaminate" it with his sweat and DNA and Proteins. You know what that means in reality. It also explains a lot of what happens in the Answer. You would find this out if you Max out Aigis' social link.

2.) Tiburon is the guys name. Strange. Tiburon means "Shark" in Spanish.

3.) Now this one was a ball buster. It gives 30 hp back. It would be the ultimate test to see if someone would eat a key item in Earthbound just to know what it did.

4.) The End, The Fear, The Pain, The Sorrow, The Fury and The Joy are the members of the Cobra unit Naked Snake takes down in MGS 5. The only real tricky one is if you didn't pay attention that The Boss was actually known as the Joy.

5.) Romero's Special is a rediculously hard to pull off special grapple move in Tekken done by King. Suffice it to say, if it lands you lost the round. I've never seen anyone pull it off in play. I've only done it perhaps twice in practice.

Super Mega Happy Ultra Quiz Time Round 2!

I realize my last quiz might have been brutal on some people, but a number of people actually got a lot of hard questions right. Anyways, I apologize for what I might consider easy or hard but here it goes (this time I will give hints).

Easy :

1.) Who is Tyris Flare?

Hint : Appears in a Sega game

2.) What game does the BFG appear in?

Hint : It's considered the godfather of FPSes

3.) This character is a composite of the main characters in Terminator and Escape from New York.

Hint : His name begins with two of the same letters

4.) What is Megaman's name in Japan?

Hint : It's something "hard"

5.) Kid Icarus is not the star of the same named game. What is the characters name?

Hint : Don't fall in it

Medium :

1.) Who is the Champion of Unreal Tournament (in the game)?

Hint : His last name could end in X

2.) What's that blue flame all over M. Bison called?

Hint : It belongs in a mental institution

3.) Who are Biggs Wedge and Vicks?

Hint : This is a very open question, I just want to see the answers people give

4.) Who do you want to blow up in Halo 1, but never get to but finally do in Halo 3?

Hint : It's a flying glowing orb, but I want the name

5.) Name the 3 levels of evolution of an electric rat.

Hint : Gotta catch all three

Hard : No more hints

1.) What is the name of the object the Main Character contaminates on Aigis in Persona 3:FES?

2.) The Crocodile Knight may be quite possibly one of the coolest ****s in a game. Name the Crocodile Knight from Warsong (AKA Langrisser 1).

3.) How much HP would Pokey be regaining from eating his Trout Yogurt (without condiments of course)?

4.) What are the Cobra Unit's 5 code names?

5.) What is Romero's Special?
