I have an iPod Touch, a Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 tablet and a 3DS. I only do gaming on the 3DS because it has much better games and controls. If phones and tablets want to be serious competitors in the gaming space the games need to get much better. That might not be possible with the terrible touch screen controls. A PS3 controller can be used via Bluetooth on android devices but only if you root them, a risky thing to do. Even if you are successful with that it's only good for running emulators. Real gaming systems are the way to go.
My guess is only the larger libraries in wealthy communities have video games. I work at a smaller library in a town near Elmhurst and we don't have video games, but people do ask if we have them on occasion. Video games are tricky because they're expensive, there are multiple platforms and it takes a few years to build up a decent collection. By that time they become less relevant when the next generation hits and we have to start over again. Whereas with DVDs we've been working on our collection for nearly 15 years and it's quite impressive now and circulates like crazy.
The next gen console war could look something similar to the PS2 era. Microsoft is killing the 720 before it's even announced (if the rumors are true). This leaves the PS4 to dominate the core market. Then there's Nintendo with their slow selling WiiU which survives on Nintendo's first party games.
This article doesn't mention the most offensive thing to me, which is Microsoft having always-online cameras in our homes. Hackers and possibly even Microsoft employees would have great fun spying on our living rooms and bedrooms. Nobody should buy an Xbox 720 for this reason alone.
