I'm pretty sure that the PSP Slim and the original PSP have the same screen brightness settings. Also, loading times are not faster, I don't know where one of the posters above conjured this speculation from.
In my opinion, the PSP model you should get all depends on what you want to do with the PSP. If you want to softmod it and install Custom Firmware in order to play PSP game backups from a Memory Stick, play PS1 games, Nintendo 64 games, Sega Mega Drive/Genesis games, SNES games, NES games, Game Boy Advance games and a whole load of other console games via emulation go for the PSP 1000 (original 'fat' PSP). This is because you can run the 1.5 firmware kernal ontop of the latest Custom Firmware release. In other words, you have access to all Sony's features with their official firmware whilst maintaining the ability to play your backups and emulators and a whole load of other stuff (like programs to let you take screenshots, or listen to music whilst ingame).
If none of that interests you, go for the PSP 2000 (PSP Slim) as this does have a slightly longer battery life. However, there is noway to properly install the 1.5 kernal on a PSP Slim so you will not be able to run as many things as on the Fat. You will still be able to install Custom Firmware though to run PSP game backups from your memory stick as well as a few other things.
Enjoy.
The PSP doesn't really break software side, however, it will stop working if you dunk it in some water or throw it at somebody.
