One thing Unity did get right was Paris. It really is gorgeous, and quite diverse. It just sucks that that's all there is. No other cities, no forests or plains. No outskirts to take in the environment. I would have loved to see the rest of France.
Guess that'll never happen because I'm not buying another AC game. Gameplay is the most recycled since Revelations, but with a lack of features rather than an excess.
So after playing this for two days, and getting over the excitement of the graphics, I'd say that this is probably the worst AC I've played. It's left such a bitter taste in my mouth, especially after the excellent Black Flag. It's abandoned all sense of progression and experimentation that AC3 and AC4 had.
Though they've revamped the engine, they have not revamped the gameplay at all. It's still exactly the same but with better animation. Graphics are gorgeous, but the massive crowds exist only as filler. They have little gameplay value.
Side activities are a joke. They're plain, lazy and there is no motivation behind most of them. One had me fetch a rope. The dynamic events that can occur are events that already occurred in older games. One is a thief. The other, is people bullying another person. Wait, weren't these present in AC2?
The skill system would be alright, if the skills actually made sense and were not just rehashes of those already in previous entries. Why would I need to learn three different skills to throw three different grenades? It feels like needless gating, and needless grinding to obtain them.
A plus is the massive amount of customisation they've afforded you. You can pick hoods, gloves, trousers, waist and chest, and there's a wealth of weapons.
I've yet to try out co-op (with the servers being down), and have done little of the story, so I can't comment on those aspects.
Ultimately, it feels like a prettier, but weaker, AC2. There's less to do, less to see, nearly identical mechanics. I'll probably turn this into a review once I've finished the game, but it's a pretty big 'stay away' score for me.
