I recently bought a PS3 and like you, am a college student with limited income. If money is an issue (which it probably is) bear in mind that the Microsoft compartmentalizes the price of the 360. After buying the console you'll need to purchase a play and charge kit ($22.99)(which defeats the purpose of having a wireless controller) OR a quick charge kit ($32.99). Then you might consider buying a cooling unit (approx. $25.00) to avoid the red ring of death. Add-on another $100 for a wireless adaptor (wireless was the only option for me) if you need one. Taking that into account as well as the price of a subscription to Xbox Live, and the price difference doesn't make as big of a difference (if at all favours the PS3). However in the end, IT'S ALL ABOUT THE GAMES. One of my close friends suggested to me as I was deciding which console to buy that I should make a list of all of the current and upcoming games that I want for each system (good advice:)). Let that be the deciding factor in where you spend your $400-$500.
I think that the unreliablity of the 360 has left a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths. That and the PS3 upcoming line-up of great games (many of which are exclusive), has people leaning more towards the PS3 (IMO).
I'm actually looking forward to the North Amercan release of Fire Pro Returns (PS2). If you dont' know the Fire Pro series, it's worth it to check it out (it's gonna be a budget title). I used to get excited about the Smackdown series, but not as much anymore...
