TheC0m1ssar Blog

Hi guys.

Wow. It's been such a long time since I've used this profile.

I'm just here to let you guys know that I'm probably never going to post again. I occasionally post a blog every now and then on NoobFeed (as DeltaX), but that's about it. I wonder if GiantBomb is worth going to.

Just popping in to say hi. Man, lots of memories in this place.

Cheers.

I Think I'm Back...

Whoa. 79 messages in my inbox. Shocking.

Well, what have I been up to? I'll outline that right now.

Fallout 3:

It's like a much better version of Oblivion with guns! At first when I bought it, I thought the whole 40s-50s retro idea would completely turn me off from it, but it wasn't as bad as I thought. The world seemed a bit small for me, though, I liked Oblivion's better. Also, the tons of debris in DC makes it hard to traverse except through the metro stations, which also kind of irritated me. Nonetheless, the game is a blast. I got the first 3 DLCs and they're awesome (albeit pretty short). And those plethora of delicious mods (not the nude ones, mind you). Enclave Commander FTW!

Prototype:

I needed a game with nothing but pure mayhem and carnage with a touch of backstory to give me reason to do it. Prototype was this game. I beat the game fairly fast and got bored of it, but it serves me very well in alleviating anger. Very, very well. I still play it from time to time.

Far Cry 2:

See, when I was at the store, I had to make a hard choice with my bros about this. It was either this game, or Dawn of War 2. Now, since there's 3 of us, we could only get 3 games (as per parent rules). So we decided to get FC2. I absolutely regret doing that. First thing that I noticed, and stood out glaringly: the BAD ACTING. Jesus, Ubisoft Montreal, WHERE did you get your voice actors? The only person that sounded even halfway decent was Xianyang Bai, and even then... eww. Second thing: the whole feel of the game... it just felt like GTA in Africa in FPS mode, with a few safe zones thrown between. I had no feeling of "being in the game" at all, no immersion. It was just pretty much just run, gun, shoot, grab pay, repeat.

Oh, and the Jackal looks a lot like Jack Carver from the first Far Cry. Speaking of which, I'll go play that later.

Now, onto real life. I've been taking SAT study classes at the behest of my parents. Suffice to say that I don't really like it. Well, I like the learning, just not the sheer heavy amounts of work that they put on us. It's kind of irritating, but 8 weeks is a long time...

Still playing RO private servers. The new one I've been playing on has kept me playing for 8 months now... can't really describe it, but there's some sort of charm with RO that always keeps me coming back to it. Maybe it's because it IS a P2P game officially, and I've been playing nothing but crap F2Ps...but yeah. Also, Aion is coming out soon. I wish I had a credit card for that.

Oh, another thing. ? MechWarrior 5? Yes, please. :D

Inactivity (Yet Again!)

My attention span is starting to kick in again. Last 6 weeks of school. And I find myself coming to this site less and less...

I'll try to get back during the summer. :( Until then, I'll just be on and off, I guess.

Crytek Reveals CryEngine 3

First off: It's multiplatform. The whiny console people are finally getting their share of Crysis. :3

CryEngine 3 Article

Video link:

CryEngine 3 GDC2009 Demo

Yay? :D

UPDATE: OnLive. It seems weird.

Most notable features of it:
-Run every PC game regardless if it's on Mac
-Run every game at high detail and framerate regardless of computer hardware (This part, I'm interested in)
-See friends, view videos, buy/play games

Who knows, maybe PC gaming has finally gone past "next-gen" and maybe created a generation of its own? It's essentially the PC's version of Xbox Live (except you get more bang for your buck).

New Possibilities [UPDATED AGAIN]

Okay, in case you haven't read in my previous post, my Internet was upgraded and all of a sudden I'm downloading things left and right. So I'll just have a little comment on what I've downloaded.

The Last Remnant Demo:

Call me stupid or ancient, but I don't see why people call this game bad. I really like the combat system (sure, it's still turn-based, but I like being able to interact during combat, and the combat plays out realtime, too). There's a lot to do and shows plenty of the game through the demo, but (as with Japan's ports to PC), the keys require some figuring out to do (just like RE4). It's been too dang long since I played a JRPG, and this demo has just adamantly insured its position in my buying list this summer.

Medal of Honor: Airborne Demo:

My first question was: Why the heck didn't I get this game? My second question was: Was it really supposed to work this good? I mean, it's EA, for crying out loud. It's an awesome game, not a lot of people like CoD-style, but enough to keep you from being German bullet-bait. The cover system is what I liked the most, being able to lean and adjust your height while aiming down the sites.

Gothic 3:

A lot of people said this was an Oblivion-killer. I fail to see the difference. I died while trying to run back to camp, but I was poisoned and I died mid-air as I tried to jump into the camp (A major LOL moment). Not to mention that the detail is horrible and has the same "Loading Area" things like Oblivion. Just that Oblivion looked better while doing them. The skill tree is also very confusing... it says I have 20 "learning points" yet I can't use them on anything? WTF?!

Devil May Cry 4:

It runs pretty smoothly for one of Capcom's second or so title on the PC. I like the gameplay but I can see where it gets really, really repetitive. Though the arm thingy is pretty cool (I wish I had that in DMC3).

Dynasty Warriors 6 Demo:

Okay, I like the DW series, but I did not like where they went with the direction on this. It's pretty much just running around and killing things. And you don't even look cool killing things anymore! And they completely screwed around with what the characters looked like and their weapons as well. It's just... not cool anymore. :(

Combat Arms:

I do ridiculously well for a noob. That is, until some a-hole hacker started ruining everyone's game. Psh, the nerve of people on the Internet.

Tom Clancy's HAWX Demo:

Pretty good. The sky and city details are absolutely awesome (Rio de Janiero, Brazil). It took some getting used to with the controls, but I eventually got it. Fared pretty well, though not in an actual fight against the combat UCAVs; I ended up getting hit 4 times before I realized that braking and pulling up was a great way to get the drop on them. Still don't know how to barrel roll... but I'm sure I'll figure it out. The controls are pretty simplified for the PC and it felt natural to pilot my jet.

Okay, now onto the main mission instead of rookie training. Your people (The Artemis Global Security PMC), have been ordered to protect little Rio from the attacks of another country. Coincidentally, they've got their little navy positioned right outside of the port. So guess who gets to take it out? You, of course.

The first little thing I noticed, is that you have a wingman. I suppose this would be where co-op comes in. :P The combat gets nice and dicey from the start, with you given the objectives to eliminate air and naval craft. Now, in dogfighting, "drifting" (braking your thrusters and pulling up) saves your skin a lot more times than you think, and is also a great way to evade missile and pulling extremely sharp turns, which goes without saying that if you do nothing but turn left all day trying to get a lock, you won't make any progress. The dogfighting mode really makes a difference in jet combat; without it, it would have been one heck of a pain to target and fire missiles, since you need a direct line of sight.

And that ends that! Next demos up are: NFS Most Wanted and Necrovision. If anyone has any recommendations for demos (or full games) for me to try out, please post them here. :)

School, Games, and Important Things

Hey, everybody! Apologies for not being able to blog (that often).

First up is... proxies + school computers = lots of fun (provided you don't get caught).

Second! I'm utterly miffed that I can't buy any games right now (my SAT is in 2 weeks). So my current list of games to buy this coming summer is: Dawn of War 2, Prototype, and... uh, something else. Recommend something good for PC. :P

Also up is the new generation of MMOs coming out of Korea, which look totally stunning (hard to say about the gameplay, though... could just be more of the same). Games like The Exiled Realm of Arborea, Blade & Soul, and Aion are all awesome games (Note: The last 2 games are owned by NCsoft).

Also, has anyone else been watching Important Things with Demetri Martin? Totally hilarious show, and I'm glad I learned about it. :D

UPDATE: Verizon has upgraded my family's internet connection! Now, instead of downloading at a measly 90 kb/s, I can download 350 kb/s! And there's almost no lag while I play online games simultaneously. Everyone wins! :D

Post Valentines Blog!

And before you ask, no, I didn't get a Valentine *whew*

Okay, first off. Gears got fixed! It only took them almost over a week to do it. :P

Second! Gundam 00. Mega-uber-fuber drama! Can't beat it!

Third! I've gotten back into Dungeon Siege 2: Broken World again. Totally awesome action RPG. A nice counterpart to Diablo for those that like playing in parties instead of by themselves.

Fourth: Skull Candy earphones have survived one week! Party time! *takes out cookie box*

Fifth: How was YOUR Valentines?

Yeah, I know, pretty short. I can't write long stuff because I always get Writer's Block (meaning that I lose train of thought easily, and I can't get it back again until later).

A Gears PC Conspiracy!

Gears of War just recently had the controversial "Game executable has been modified" error. So, I just about can't play it anymore (and I just got my gamertag to work today!). Just makes me wonder if this is some sort of trick by Microsoft to make us pay for patches, in addition to making me wonder if it's also attached to all their GFW titles as well! But we shall see. Boo, GFW.

On another note, my Skull Candy earphones come in next week! I also purchased Nick Turse's The Complex: How the Military Invades Our Everyday Lives, too. I found it through Wikipedia and became interested in it, so I bought it. :P The shipments are due next Mon/Tues.

Dawn of War 2 comes out next month! I would be playing the beta right now, but my brother started complaining (like he usually does) whenever the internet hits a speed bump and forced me to cancel the download because he "couldn't train his Hunter in Ragnarok Online".

The Last Remnant did pretty bad, but I've been itching for a singleplayer RPG for a long time (a bloody shame that FFXIII will never get a PC port, we could run it at 2x the detail and with DX10, too!), and I heard that the system was much improved as well, so it'll be on my list in the near future (most likely to be picked up during the summer), to be picked up as the PC version, of course.

On yet another note, I actually have enough money to afford a 360! But since it's the middle of the school year, my parents don't want me buying "more mindless games", and I'm taking the SAT this year... well, yeah. FFXIII... ooooooh, how teasing that is.

Section 8

Section 8 is a FPS shooter that takes place in the future, where the colonies under the United States have fallen to an insurrection that spread like wildfire through the systems. The 8th Armored Infantry Regiment (shortened to "Section 8") of the United States military is sent to contain the threat. Sent in first to the frontlines, the elite Section 8 is the spearhead of the assault.

Curiously, according to the website, Section 8 also refers to a part under military doctrine which discharges soldiers due to being mentally unfit to fight. A twist on the title, as the website explains that the 8th commonly volunteers itself for missions that would normally be considered suicide.

An unusually Battlefield-like shooter that mysteriously appears out of nowhere with one trailer that shows extremely good promise? We'll see.:P Timegate claims that they have some new twists on the formula with "burning in" (orbital drop to anywhere on the map) and on-demand vehicle and supply deliveries. Not to mention that their suits look awesome.

Beta is at FilePlanet (curiously, I am unable to find the link).

Homepage is at JoinSection8.com

Their second video (first video didn't hold much): Finish Trailer

It's being made by Timegate Studios, creators of the dreaded FEAR expansion packs and the decent RTS games Axis and Allies, and Kohan. Just throwing it out there because it's literally nonexistent as of right now.

Windows 7

Something that I'm actually looking forward to. I have Vista Ultimate as of current (gained because my Core 2 Duo came in late and they gave it to me for FREE!) and it's working fine, but since they say that Windows 7 has a ---PERFORMANCE BOOST--- (something that all of us PC gamers like), I'm probably going to be buying the lowest or mid-level version of it sometime this year. Since Vista support has gone bottoms up, I'm definitely going to have to change.

So what about you guys? What are your thoughts? Yay? Nay? Don't care because you have a console? Post 'em here.
