Warhammer 40k: Space Marine Impressions

Okay, now here's the first thing I'm going to throw out:

PC PLEASE!

Okay, now that that's out of the way, onto the detailed scrutiny.

Graphics:

Absolutely stunning, and displays every bit of Warhammer lore as it should be. The detailed Imperial architecture, to the Valkyries flying through the city, and down to the armors and details of the Space Marine and his adversaries. It would seem that only the graphics in this day and age can actually do it justice.

Sound:

It isn't the full scope of it yet, but the sound is pretty good. (Especially when I heard the CO say something about the "traitorous filth" over the voxcom).

Gameplay:

Combat as it should be, Warhammer style. Although it seems fluid on a level like God of War, it just seemed strangely off pace. Especially considering the fact that while pulling finisher moves, the world around you doesn't stop. I saw the Marine get pushed over once or twice whilst doing a finisher. It could use some work, but other than that, they've got a winner here.

360 Price Drop - Yay or Nay?

Now, here's the stereotypical reactions from what I've seen so far:

360 Fanboy: YES!!!!
PS3 Fanboy: Great, more RRODs for Christmas.
Neutrals: Who cares? It's just a price drop.

What do you think? I think it's great because it gives me more of an incentive to buy one now... PS3... still looking drab.

STALKER Pet Peeves

STALKER was probably one of the few rare gems out there that was made, though it contained many bugs (technical ones notwithstanding) that deprived the player of the true experience. I'm going to address some of my own pet peeves today. Hopefully, they'll be fixed in Clear Sky.

1. How you aimin' that gun, boy?

Okay, since when do we hold guns to the sides of our face? This is probably my first and biggest pet peeve with STALKER, since that when you pull out any main-handed weapon, whether it be the Viper 5, G36, or the SVD, it seems that you hold it right next to your face at eye level instead of shoulder point as most games like CoD4 or Crysis might do. It seemed a little too arcadey, and as such, it was kind of annoying to have that with me through the entire game.

2. Where's the big guns?

Okay, so the AK47 and G36 are in the game. But what about more reputable weapon companies such as Colt or H&K? They should have their weapons in there, and I would especially love to use a weapon such as the M4 or maybe the Barrett .50 sniper rifle? Hopefully, we'll get to see some more variety in Clear Sky, and see some decent re-do's of the current weapons.

3. What? I have to go back in... *gulp* Again?!

Okay, the Dark Valley is not the most inviting, friendly, and cheerful place in Chernobyl. Actually, it's quite the opposite. The place is dark, dead, and very, very quiet. The slightest noise will make you jump, and you'll always want your flashlight and nightvision on. Not to mention that the lab you have to infiltrate also has some bugs (for me), such as the monster on the bottom level not spawning and me having to start all over again, or sometimes the door doesn't open even after I put in the right passcode. Either way, having to go through a grueling experience again and again (Agropom Sewers, ugh) is not fun.

4. You lean against the wall, not stand next to it.

Some of the AI in STALKER, is, at times, very smart. Unfortunately, it also has some kinks (grenade detection is nonexistent). Also, they like to seem to crouch in front of the wall. You know, on the side that the bullets fly at them, instead of hiding on the other side and letting them impact on a wall.

5. Bloodsucker-radar system

This might seem stupid, it may not. I cannot stress how many times a Bloodsucker can jump you, especially at night. They need some sort of radar system that can detect incoming Bloodsuckers, as it's not really that easy to spot them (only their breathing gives them away) due to their natural camouflage. Usually when you notice that they're there, milliseconds later, they start slashing you. Not pretty, especially if there's more than one, which is plausible about half the time, in places like the Red Forest and Rostok. As a gist of how hard it is, go hunt a Bloodsucker at night. You'll see what I mean. The only thing that gives them away at night is their breathing when they're REALLY close to you, or the blood-red of their eyes mixed with the blur of their camouflage movement.

6. Give the modders something to work with!

Modders, clever beings as they are, figured out a way to mod the files without having to use an SDK, by extracting and modifying current game files. This allowed creation of amazing mods such as the Oblivion Lost mod, Priboi's Story, and many more, which took the original raw data (zombies, mutants, dwarf-thingys) of the game that was locked away and put them back into the game, or even added another story to the game (the case of Priboi story). This also allowed modders to create incredible graphics enhancing mods that enhanced the game experience even more. But, however, it was all done by hand by the modders themselves. Introduction To Modding can be found on the STALKERFiles forums here.

7. Optimize!

Okay, vanilla STALKER without patches or mods looks absolutely terrible. It also runs less than satisfactory even on decent systems. It's always wiser to optimize the game before it launches for decent performance on many systems (much like how Blizzard optimized Warcraft 3 so it can run on my 9-year-old computer that my dad has). Though there are some games with worse optimization (Crysis! Why?!), it's one of those unwritten rules in PC gaming. It has to work decently on a 3-year old system at the very least. :| However, knowing the time constraints that PC developers often have, it's not too far-fetched that they won't be able to pull it off before release.

Note: In the Dark Valley, across the street from the main Bandit base which you're supposed to raid, there's a small house. Don't go in that house. Really. On the second floor is the body of a bandit. Sure, he's got some pretty average or less-than-average gear on him, but it's what happens next that I recommend you to stay out of. You WILL get jumped by a Bloodsucker as soon as you loot/locate his body. Just a warning. Make sure you pack some decent lead on you before trying that house. The first time I had this happen to me I was scared out of my daylights. The fact that it was nighttime didn't alleviate the situation much, either.

School! GASP!

So, I have school starting in 3 days. As much as I don't like it, I guess I have to deal with it. :|

My parents might also be pulling my internet. They've implied it a few times, though they haven't confirmed it. I can't put anything off, though. They're serious about wanting me to stay on track with school this year.

And... Code Geass R2. Wow. It just keeps getting better and better. I hope I can see the end of the season, unless I am internet-deprived. :(

My Birthday! :D

Okay, it was yesterday. And we had pie.

Other than that, none of my relatives came to visit me! Even the one that I suggested to get a 360 for me and my brothers! The only time anyone actually acknowledged my birthday was in FeelRO, where my guildies held a party for me and I got 1mil money as a present, and online here on GS, where sacred thankfully remembered my birthday!

Very sad how the people I know online remembered my birthday, while my own family doesn't. :|

Will I Get A 360? Maybe Not...

But that doesn't stop me from looking into some games! :D

First off is Lord of the Rings: Conquest. I mean, it's like a LotR version of Star Wars Battlefront, just so much more awesome and more action packed! Well, Pandemic did make Battlefront...

Another game is The Force Unleashed. I never really bothered to look into it because it wasn't for PC, but now I have to agree that it is indeed impressive. The Force moves are probably the most action packed ever, as well as the Apprentice looking like one of the most pwnage characters that they ever introduced into the Star Wars series. Also liking the new dark look, it definitely fits the Apprentice's style.

Another was Fable 2. From what it looked like, there's still some kinks to work out, but the first Fable was an awesome game; I'll definitely be looking forward to this.

Will look into more games if I have the time.

My Birthday Is Next Week! :D

Well, my Birthday is next week! And today, my aunt called and asked me what I wanted for my "Sweet 16". I told her an Xbox 360. So, possibly, I could be receiving a 360 for my birthday! :D The other alternative is Dave and Buster's, which I don't mind personally. I love going there.

Well, I'm just hoping that I do get the 360.

Other Stuff:
-Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway comes out on my Bday!
-Clear Sky got moved back to September! :o
-School... in two weeks.

Underrated Games! Let Them Shine!

Just a blog about underrated games that you've played, but want people to know!

For me, it's a pretty small list. I breeze through games pretty fast:

Deus Ex (it would seem only PC gamers know it)
Star Wars: Republic Commando (It's good! Really!)
SWAT 4 (This. Needs. A. Sequel)

And that's all I got so far. Got some games on your mind? Let it be known! :D

Starcraft vs. Warhammer 40k

Okay, this is the sort of debate that me (WH40k) and my friends (SC) have debated on for quite a while now. Here's the facts that I've laid out for the Starcraft factions and their respective counterparts:

Terrans: Simply just Space Marines without the genetic enhancements, powerr armour, or common sense in general. If they went head to head, Space Marines would win. 100% As for everything else... Ghosts. Their nukes would do an adequate amount of damage, but as long as the Imperial Navy has a little something called "Exterminatus*", Terrans stand no chance against Warhammer in any way possible. In fact, I think they suck so much that I'm confident that even the Guardsman's flashlight can kill them.

Protoss: The Eldar would just camp these guys to no tomorrow. Just by facing the Farseer in combat, most of their Templars would be eradicated. The Dark Templars would probably be annihilated by the Ranger squads. As if that wasn't bad enough, Protoss probably won't be able to fight back against the Wraithlords, Falcons, and Fire Prisms that the Eldar would be pouring into the battle. The Warp Spiders are a bane against any infantry unit, and possess deadly grenades which would probably take out most Protoss vehicles in one shot. And the Archons? They would probably fight well, but since the Eldar are experienced with knocking out shields, they stand no chance.

Zerg: Tyranids would eat them for breakfast. Zerg might have numbers and broods, and Kerrigan as well, but compared to the Tyranids, they're small fry. Zerg can only convert Terrans into walking bombs. Tyranids take every bit of DNA they find and adapt it to their hive, whether it be poison resistance, chitinous armor plates, or organic acid cannons. Not to mention that the Tyranids also have organic hive ships about the size of most battlecruisers and they can spit acid, too. And they have creatures as big as an Imperator Titan**. According to Warhammer lore, almost every single world that the Tyranids came into contact with was utterly obliterated if there was not an EXTREMELY strong Imperial presence there to combat them.

-C0m1

*Exterminatus, in all terms saying, means exterminate. The Imperial Navy launches missiles from orbit that literally turns the planet into a barren rock, destroying every bit of organic life and utterly destroying the air.

**And Imperator Titan's height is somewhat akin to the Empire State Building. That's pretty darn big. Now just imagine if the Empire State had legs and gigantic cannons.

And so the Olympics have started...

And, I must say, the opening cermony was amazing. They really brought out all the stops for it. And it's probably one of the biggest Olympics yet. And not to mention that Michael Phelps broke a world and Olympic world record for swim, but, seriously, who didn't see that coming?

China is doing remarkably well, which is good for them, considering that it's probably their first time in the Olympics since... ever, I guess. :P

Anywhos, onto gaming. I've had a bit of guild drama in Ragnarok (what's wrong with having an alternate in another guild? Sheesh) and otherwise it's doing pretty good. Just switching in between this and Dark Crusade now because, honestly, leveling gets boring. Even if it earns you some pretty good stuff that you can sell for 2 milliion plus cash.

And also as another plus, I might post up an official unofficial review of Inquisition Daemonhunt. :D

Fun Factoid - Fable: The Lost Chapters

When you enter Bowerstone North, you find that the merchant there sells something called the Solus Greatsword. Contrary to it's name, the Solus doesn't stand for the sword's fire elements; rather, it stands for the Latin meaning of Solus, "the only", and is true because it's the only Solus Greatsword in the game.
