HL2 features a lot of puzzle elements as well... does that make it not a FPS? I'll admit, Portal was exceptionally puzzle heavy... but it is a FPS at heart, but non-traditional. Much like Mirror's Edge or Condemned: Criminal Origins.

No, it's just a puzzle game in first-person view. There's shooting, but there is little combat use for it. Half-Life 2 is very combat focused, but it has puzzles and other gameplay elements. However, Half-Life 2 is primarily combat focus. Mirror's Edge isn't a shooter either, it's a first-person platformer. Condemned is a survival-horror game in a first-person view point.

and mw2 is just a war simulator in first person? Cmon, lets not get into all these sub genres.

Portal is then a sub-FPS, it's primarily puzzle game. Therefore, it's a puzzle game. Deus Ex and System Shock 2 are at least half-first-person shooters. Hell, Deus Ex is 75% FPS if you play it that way.

Gears of War 2 is a first-person shooter, that is why you're almost always in a third-person perspective.... -_-

Uh...

Can I name 10 I truly can call my "favourite"?

1. The Ultimate Doom + Doom II: Hell On Earth + The Final Doom
2. System Shock 2
3. The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay
4. Star Wars: Republic Commando
5. STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl
6. Day of Defeat 1.3/Source
7. Call of Duty + United Offensive
8. Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil
9. Timesplitters 2 + Future Perfect
10. Perfect Dark HD

Games that are in first person... but aren't necessarily shooters and I prefer them to most shooters:

- Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines
- Metroid Prime
- Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
- Condemned: Criminal Origins
- Star Wars: Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast
- Mirror's Edge
- Thief: The Dark Project + The Metal Age

I'm not sure to qualify The Chronicles of Riddick as a shooter. Since half the game is about exploration, stealth, and melee combat. Then again, it does offer more gunplay than Metroid Prime.

[QUOTE="kipohippo021"]1. Halo Reach 2. Portal (first person shooter, i have a gun, its first person, i shoot, sounds like a fps to me)

Oh, please. It's mainly a puzzle game. It's not as if you're attacking or combating anyone with the Portal gun. It's not an FPS. I never saw one website ever nominating it for an "First-Person Shooter of the Year" award.

How is metroid not a shooter?

davidkamayor
Cause, it's not mainly shooting focused. 75% of the game is made up of puzzle solving, exploration, and platforming. It can barely even qualify as a shooter. Considering the combat models is weak and bland. Even Dues Ex and System Shock 2 allows players to play it mostly as a shooter. Even Retro Studios declared it as an First-Person Action/Adventure game, not a FPS.

My money bets that either Super Mario Galaxy 2 or Mass Effect 2 will earn the most Game of the Year awards.

I haven't played Reach yet. I will say that Halo Combat Evolved is easily the best game in the series.

I'll start off with my list 1. Deus Ex 2. Half-Life 3. Team Fortress 2 4. System Shock 2 5. Starsiege Tribes 6. Halo Combat Evolved 7. Crysis 8. Marathon 9. Doom 10. Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare Also, please don't add games like Portal, Thieff 1 and 2, Mirror's Edge or any Metroid Prime game. They are not first-person shooters. Just because a game is in first-person, doesn't automatically make it a FPS.
