Because they signed up for a job that could, someday, get them killed.

If we are going to use that logic, then we should automatically honor, praise, and respect people in the logging industry, because it is a hazardous job that could someday get them killed.
If we are referring to active duty, then yes, but not everyone who is in the military should automatically be honored and respected.
People who are doctors, psychiatrists, and teachers provide services that are just as important, and unless there are actual combat operations, law enforcement and even the logging industry can be far more hazardous and life-threatening.
I also do not understand why people say that everyone who joins the military is volunteering. They are getting benefits and financial support for their services, just like in other careers.
Also, not everyone who joins the military is doing so to "protect and serve this country." Perhaps people need to consider that a lot of people join the military simply for the benefits, experience and money.
The only thing I can respect from a soldier is that they signed up knowing they may be sent into combat operations and killed or wounded, but like I said you could say that about any other dangerous career.
I do, however, have immense respect for soldiers who have been in active duty, even though they had no choice in matter because soldiers are forced to follow orders, simply because if they are not in active duty, then I would have to be in active duty.
