The official state of TOR on consoles as of now:

BioWare: No The Old Republic for consoles!

Just because EA gave Sony some DLC doesn't mean they'll gladly port over one of their most expensive projects ever.

waltefmoney

Need I remind you: http://kotaku.com/5462963/mass-effect-on-ps3-bioware-says-no EA's the new sherriff in town, now. EA Loves Consoles EA loves Sony. EA wants Star Wars to do WoW type numbers Nuff said, really.

Fair enough, so you can expect to hear info about TOR on consoles a year after the game is released.. if it survives that long. As of now - the game is NOT coming to consoles.

Since Bioware lied before, Closer to the truth is, Star Wars: TOR hasn't been announced for consoles...... yet. ;)

Where did EA's network infrastructure come from? An MMO's network infrastructure is a lot different from that used for other types of games because they have to run persistent content. It's like comparing Home's infrastructure to PSN's. Plus MMOs take dedication to play properly (look at the real-life incidents relating to MMO players going too far). Do you really see console gamers having the dedication to play an MMO long enough to make it worthwhile? Perhaps FF14 and DC Online will provide some much-needed measuring sticks.HuusAsking
You made a grave mistake in mentioning HOME. Maybe you didn't know, but HOME is a first party MMO.....multiple updates and all. However, the reason I mentioned EA's network infrastructure is because EA runs their own private servers away from PSN. A select few developer/publishers are granted this latitude....EA, Konami, Tecmo-Koei, Valve, and presumably NC SOFT whenever they get their unannounced game ready.

But even EA knows that MMOs are a real hit-or-miss affair on consoles. Two Phantasy Star MMOs have come and gone. FF11's a shadow of its former self, and 14's a big question mark along with DC Online. Taking TOR to the PS3 will depend a lot on what happens here, and I would think EA is canny enough to make sure it'll take before diving in.HuusAsking
Phantasy Star is nice.....but Phantasy Star isn't STAR WARS....not even by a longshot. FF11 is still running on consoles too btw, and has been a success overall. The game is 8 years old too btw. EA already has the network infrastructure on the PS3 to do this. It will happen. I'd honestly be shocked and surprised if it didn't. But I'm a prophet, so count it already. ;)

More RAM is needed, though. RTS's, especially today, can be very hungry especially when you get a high unit count. But for an RTS to work, you can't rely on the PC RTS formula--it's micromanagement motif relies too much on the PC's preferred devices. You'd need a different scheme altogether--a way to alter the S part of the RTS so that, perhaps, you can't micromanage, can only give orders in broad, or have delays in being able to see movements or having commands carried out (I say this because these could add more realistic elements to an RTS which may be a good way to take RTS's in new directions, but the audience has to want it first).HuusAsking
More ram is needed for what, exactly? The ram in consoles (512 MB) may seem small in comparison to PC ram, but it's also not an apples to apples comparison. Because of the low overhead of consoles, and with proper game optimizations, That half gig of console ram is equivalent to 1.5 - 2 GB of PC ram....approx. That's an estimation of course, but a proper "in the ballpark" one.

Since you obviously work at EA or BioWare, could you tell me how you're gonna play an MMO with a controller?coreybg
Probably much the same way as this one, perhaps. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VEYqM_U_ZAQ

when the spend the time to devolp one and allow people to use a mouse and keyboard or controller yes.

dalscowboys22
BINGO! It isn't that there isn't a market for Console RTS's.....it's that there has never been a great RTS on Consoles, ever...and pretty good (Halo Wars) doesn't equal "GREAT". Almost every single developer has been too lazy to give the simple option of adding Keyboard and Mouse functionality for their RTS-console game. I mean, if you're gonna be too inept to bring good controller based user interfaces, the least you can do is add a K/M option. But those who are saying there is no market for console RTS's, they speak prematurely. Fact is, there has never been a great RTS delivered to consoles. When one does arrive and if said game does perform poorly, sales wise...at that point, then those people will have a right and reason to make that claim. Currently, there is no legitimate right.

I hope SW TOR goes PS3 bound, even though bioware seems infuriated at the concept. (Still EA wants > bioware)

I won't be getting a PC good enough to play it.

Throughout Bioware's history, while they do make some really good games, they've also shown that their business acuity is lower than their talent....That's why EA owns them now, and why Star Wars: TOR will be on consoles, regardless of whether Bioware particularly likes it or not. Kudo's to EA.

[QUOTE="Unnatural101"]I'm hoping GUILD WARS 2 goes to the PS3....that's would be great.AdrianWerner

I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you.

I would. NC SOFT has said that they were interested in bringing some of their games to the PS3. What better game to bring than Guild Wars? While I can't give a definitive prediction on GW2, I can say that there is a pretty good chance. However, Star Wars: TOR, I do give a definitive prediction. I predict that at some point EA and/or Bioware will announce that MMO to consoles....specifically the PS3. Why? Because EA is buddy buddy with Sony, and 2, because EA is serious about pitting that game against WoW. But the only real way for that to happen is to go where WoW isn't.....to consoles. Unfortunately, TOR isn't what I really want.....like I said I want Guild Wars 2.

[QUOTE="cobrax55"]Free realms is a FTP MMO aimed at the extreamly casual audience, its for a very different crowd then what SOE normally does. SOE's MMO's have pretty much bombed all the way back to everquest 2. I thinking you are fooling yourself if you think that DC Universe is going to be a AAA MMO. The Hype for it, especially among the MMO crowd, is pretty minimal. The game is being released between numerous high profile MMO's, and I doubt the game will actually be anything more then a semi-entertaining side project for MMO players./QUOTE] The point is, Free Realms is and MMO and it has had success...period. According to Sony, Free Realms will arrive on the PS3. DC Universe might end up pretty good....we don't know...lets wait and see. Personally though, I'm hoping GUILD WARS 2 goes to the PS3....that's would be great.
