so what if its not FF. Many people who enjoy FF games play through a lot of Square Enix games as well. As far as advice, for the beginning area you want to level up outside the town for quite some time until you gain a few levels and the enemies in the cave are easier. Later on when you learn a healing spell the game becomes a tad easier and you rely less on herbs. The game just has its own kind of setup you have to learn to take advantage of.

they should make brokeback mountain the rpg first and see how it turns out.  Once they realize nobody likes gay men they will go back to the way things were.  I just dont think it would be as powerful to see some gay guys in love and one mourning the loss of the other as it would be with something straight and something normal that everyone understands.

i believe FFX-2 was only made to help get back the losses that they took from the spirits within movie.  As far as the FFXIII being multiple games, i think its a great idea.  I love to hear about the same world from different perspectives.  Sometimes when i play one FF, i wish the others had a similar world.  Just think if kh had been set in some other time during spira's history or future instead of being its own game.  I would have loved that, like to be able to play through braska's pilgrimage in a kh style game.

it sounds to me like you should to play some western rpgs because they are more what you describe and more what i cant stand.  I realize that some people want to be the focus of the game and change themselves and sometimes the way they travel based on what they choose but personally id rather have a linear experience like FFX, Xenosaga, Shadow Hearts, etc.  I totally LOVED the storylines in FFX and xenosaga and although xenosaga did somewhat fail because it had gameplay that wasnt all there, i saw nothing wrong with the gameplay in FFX.  I totally enjoyed the battle system, i loved going through the sphere grid and learning new abilities, and i loved all the crazy side stuff you could go do near the end of the game, it was great.

One problem i think that arises with your wish for player choice in the storyline progression is, do you really think its as easy to implement alongside a solid story as when you have no control and instead can follow the set path.  Suikoden 5 showed how limited the choices need to be in order to still give you a solid story to follow by giving you a few choices throughout the game.  Some of them would directly change the event a little bit, while selecting a certain choice, would give you a bad ending and you would be forced to load your last save to continue.  I would admit that this system punnishes gamers who arent following any sort of faq because they are then sometimes screwed because they didnt know that they were taking the wrong path.

Using FFX as an example, i dont see many points along the way that would really open up well to give the player a choice and still have the game follow the story.  If players had some choice that would prevent yuna from getting captured in the tournament in lucca, that would only have you skip that part.  I could also see a choice for tidus to rush in and try to save yuna during the wedding but that just wouldnt work and you would miss out on a cool scene.
Also, with higher development costs associated with next gen games, i would think the chances of seing this from japanese rpg devs is even lower because its that much harder to offer that sort of experience.  Also, other games that ive played with choices, havent had enough difference in their otherwise mediocre storyline to make me want to play through again, where i have found myself playing through FFX a good 3 times just to experience the story again.

ive only restarted one game once i figured out some things i never did before.  The first time i played through FFT i didnt realize how jobs worked and jp and all that.  Once i figured it out somewhere in chapter 2, i restarted and had a lot more fun.  I havent done this other times because usually like others, if i get stuck on a boss ill either keep trying to figure out tactics, or use a faq.

they pretty much already made an fps called ffvii DoC.  I really think it would be great to have a game with a dmc style gameplay and FF storyline and graphics on a next gen system.  I never understood why they didnt have any ultra long action rpgs with FF quality storyline, besides a few games like dark cloud 2 and rogue galaxy.  I really hope square enix makes another strategy rpg as those are my favorite kind.

ok first of all, i dont understand at all how heroes 5 does what you are hoping for unless you are talking about the single player non-story missions.  I know the story missions are very linear and have very strict rules on what you can do and scripted enemies.  The single player campaigns may have a few little things to find but i dont see how that rewards you as the little artifacts that are hidden around are just randomly generated anyway when you start the level, at least usually.

ok now i somewhat understand your argument about FFVIII although i never really noticed the enemy scaling while i played through that game and even grinded to lvl 99 because i thought it would be good.  I totally disagree about your statement with FFX though.  I never found the leveling in that game to be that slow, you just got to figure out how to level fast.  There is my favorite, the don tonberry trick where you get a bunch of monsters captured and then you get to fight don tonberry and after you beat him, with a ton of obscure skills that you can only get from items you can only steal or bribe from certain enemies, you can gain like 20 or 30 levels at once.  This gives you huge boost, enough to pretty much 1 hit most things with yuna's melee and the only downside is you run out of spheres and have to go fight for a while.

Also, the ultimate weapons in FFX are deffinately set up to reward those who put in the time as they take some crazy amounts of time for some of the weapons *COUGH*lulu's*COUGH* and they give you awesome skills that make things a lot easier.  Now i realize, that in order to beat the regular game, most of this isnt required, but there are many super strong monsters you can unlock in the arena by capturing monsters that gives you something to strive for even if its not dark aeons that are only in the international version.  Even with all my crazy stats and levels i couldnt beat most of these.

Im not really sure how FFXII will be set up but it seems to me that they will have large expanses of world similar to a MMORPG and each area have certain monsters that spawn, weak to strong, and hopefully some hidden items as well.  I know absolutely nothing as far as secret bosses or crazy hard stuff is concerned though.
