There are two things that have been true throughout history in big hunks. You can find differences in ten years, but in 50 year hunks, 100 years hunks, youll find two things to be true. One, the world is always getting better. Two, people always think its getting worse.

I was looking at some screenshots for FFXIV (don't know why, I'm not planning on buying it), and found this:

Hm. Does anyone else feel like these character designs are more distracting than they are stylized? I can't help but question the application of some of the armor and weapons.

Take the Dragoon for example. The Dragoon has always been designed this way, and they probably designed the character out of tradition, but take a look at his lance. The lance is supposed to be heavy so it can pierce through your opponent's armor. The designers got that part right, but what about those extrusions just below the spike? What's the application? Why bother having those there? Wouldn't that make the weapon off-balance, making it weird to hold? The back of the lance has some odd and seemingly pointless curvatures as well. But the thing that bugs me the most is the lance is way too long. Lance's are supposed to be long, but the way its designed is taking my eyes off the dragoon and focus more on the weapon.

Next, take a look at the ranger. What's the point of having a blue left-leg and a red right-leg? And why are the leggings and shoes glossy? Also... white? Why is the ranger wearing white clothing? White is the healer's color. Ranger's represent the salt-of-the-earth kind of people, the people that learn to live in the wilderness and how to survive. Green and brown represent these characteristics more than white.

Then there's the bow. At first, I thought I was looking at some kind of structure, but then I saw the bow string and realized that that thing on the top is part of the bow. Do I even have to comment on the application of, whatever that thing is?

I could go on, but that's enough critiquing for now of just this one screenshot.

Am I being too harsh on these character designs? After all, it's a fantasy RPG game, the entire genre doesn't make sense.

What's your thoughts? Are there any games where the character design made you stop and think to yourself, "These characters are ridiculous."

I played YGO in high school and picked up MTG a couple months ago. I regret not picking MTG earlier, it's a lot of fun and games can get very intense.

YGO can be fun too, but games tend to be very anti-climactic because it's usually ends with a single magic/trap card that takes away all your defenses. But then again, I haven't played it in a very, very long time.

Software Engineering pays well and there are plenty of openings.

Math is crucial to computer science. Not because you'll use it a lot (really depends on what you're going to specialize in), but because it demonstrates your ability to solve problems. You probably won't use 95% of the math you'll learn, but it's still important nonetheless. You'll be taking a lot of Calculus courses, but Statistics, Linear Algebra, and Discrete Math might actually be of some use. I recommend taking those courses if you have the chance.

But even more importantly, just start programming. I'm not going to tell you what language to start with because that always, ALWAYS starts a useless debate on what's a good starting language. However, I can give you a few recommendations.

* Pick a language that's modern and in wide use. This will give you more up-to-date lessons, as well as give you an edge on your resume.

* Avoid material that says, "Learn C++ in a week" or "Learn Java overnight". Programming is an art in of itself and, like every other skill, it takes 10,000 hours of devoted practice to grasp.

* Be sure to challenge yourself, but don't go overboard. If you pick a project that's too challenging, you'll be disappointed when you realize just how much work it's going to take. If you pick one that's too easy, you'll get bored quickly.

I'd prefer companies to start selling ROMs for the PC and cut emulation out of consoles. Consoles will be cheaper and all my throwback games will be in one centralized box.

They should be hired by Sony to act as security consultants. They broke into the system, so they are the best people to defend it.foxhound_fox

Sometimes twenty minutes, three or four hours most of the time.
