I've heard a lot of bad stuff about Norton but I've also heard that they're not much of a system hog any longer.
And also, even if you don't use an anti virus guys you can still get infected, you don't need to visit any super shady sites to get infected. You can infected by just visiting normal sites, wowhead and wowwiki are two regular sites for example. I wouldn't be surprised if Gamespot has had some issues before too. http://www.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=25519272 For example.

Most virus's count on the user being the administrator. The chances of getting infected are slim if you're running yourself as a regular user (and only log into an admin account when you absolutely must). If a virus can compromise an admin account, it's most likely going to be patched by Microsoft instead of an antivirus company.
There are several that have been spotted but none of them are going to hit us. They haven't discovered one yet. You could just as easily say that the sun is going to blow up tomorrow, but 99.9% chance that it won'tThe_Last_Ride
If it was 99.9%, then it would have exploded once every 999 days.
