Venom_Raptor Blog

Goodbye. It was fun.

I don't know how many of you will read this, I myself find this site challenging to navigate and find what I want now, but this is basically my last blog ever, no coming back from this one.

This site used to be fantastic. I met some great people and loved reviewing games and writing blogs aswell as reading yours and generally keeping up with your lives and gaming experiences. But as you now, Gamespot has changed, and unforgivably so. I'll just put it out there as simply and truthfully possible - this site is complete s*** now. It's ruined everything I liked, even down to something as simple as rating games by scrapping the .5 on the rating scale. Why? We don't know. But I do know I've had enough of this place for a while now, ever since it got numerous bugs and overall made pathetic alterations to an otherwise likeable design.

I hate not being able to figure out the new presentation, with friend's blogs more awkward to find and not conveniently placed like before. My profile page is ruined, and it sucks to admit it so bluntly in a negative way. But the truth hurts, and that's that.

I hope if you managed to find this review, that if you can, make sure to add me on PSN - DARK_RAPTOR_7 as I would hate to lose complete contact with my remaining friends here who haven't left.

It was a fun few years. Good luck to you all in the real world. The good times here have finally come to a halt. This is me signing off for good.

Much brotherly love,

Scott :)

Only God Forgives

Ryan Gosling and Nicolas Winding Refn are teaming up once again after their recent partnership in the neo-noir crime drama 'Drive' in this upcoming brutal crime thriller. I'm a huge fan of Gosling and the director has got some successful movies under his belt that include the Pusher trilogy and Bronson. To say the least, after Elysium, this is my second most anticipated movie of the year.

only-god-forgives-poster.jpg

The film follows Julian (Gosling) who runs a Thai boxing club as a front organization for his family's drug smuggling operation, as he is forced by his mother Jenna to find and kill the individual responsible for his brother's recent death. A red band trailer released weeks ago shows that Only God Forgives will share a similar style, violent kinetic energy and soundtrack to that of Drive, and Winding Refn even stated it's a continuation of that same language - "it's based on real emotions, but set in a heightened reality. It's a fairy tale."

It has been selected to compete for the Palme d'Or (highest prize) at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival and is due for general release on July 19, 2013. I can't wait!

Here's the red band trailer featuring Ryan Gosling in typical bad-ass mode. :D

Top Movies to Watch 2013: Part 2

Here's the second half of my list, with pretty much every movie I list being ones I want to see on the big screen.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Man of Steel

super-04.jpg

Just like Christopher Nolan's stunning Dark Knight trilogy, this comic book adaptation and reboot will portray the DC character's origin story; rising from a boy into the superhero in a very realistic way unlike the Christopher Reeve series of Superman films. With Nolan producing and Hans Zimmer providing the music, you can guarentee this will be a highly moving, emotionally intense action film that will start slowly, engross you, and then come to a close with a bang. The trailer is amazing, here it is.

Release Date: June 14th

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fast and Furious 6

ff6.jpg

The previous entry in the exciting street racing franchise elevated proceedings dramatically in terms of stunts, action and cast, ultimately proving the best in the series so far. Fast and Furious 6 is no doubt going to continue its run of form with a great cast, and from the trailer it seems there will be a lot more adrenaline fueled chases and risky stunts. Here's the proof.

Release Date: May 24th

Riddick

RiddickGoT1.jpg

Another famous leading role for Vin Diesel returns this year in this much anticipated sequel in The Chronicles of Riddick Sc-Fi action series. This time, betrayed by his own kind and left for dead on a desolate planet, Riddick fights for survival against alien predators and becomes more powerful and dangerous than ever before. Soon bounty hunters from throughout the galaxy descend on Riddick only to find themselves pawns in his greater scheme for revenge. With his enemies right where he wants them, Riddick unleashes a vicious attack of vengeance before returning to his home planet of Furya to save it from destruction. Sounds awesome! Can't wait!

Release Date: September 6th

Dark Skies

tumblr_mikajskmPX1rvq7hro1_500.jpg

Already out in the US, this Sci-Fi Horror has yet to hit theatres in the UK at the moment (due out next month). It's about a suburban couple who grow increasingly isolated from their friends and neighbors as they fight to protect their children from being abducted by malevolent extraterrestrials. From the producers of Paranormal Activity and Insidious you can bet there will be jump scares scattered throughout, but I also hope they manage to create enough menace to keep me genuinely unsettled as the movie winds up to a climax. I'm really looking forward to it, and the trailer was pretty good. Check it out!

Release Date: April 5th

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pacific Rim

poster-xlarge.jpg

This upcoming science fiction film directed by Guillermo del Toro is set in a near future where soldiers piloting giant robots battle against invading giant monsters who have mysteriously risen from beneath the ocean. With a gigantic budget primarily for the sensational special effects you come to expect of a blockbuster movie dangling that premise in front of your gleaming eyes, I honestly don't think this movie will fail (except for critics of course who'll moan about the plot and characters like they always do nowadays in action movies). Here's the awesome trailer!

Release Date: July 12th

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

World War Z

Zj3pnFFND-8.jpg

Based upon the novel of the same name, this upcoming post-apocalyptic horror starring Brad Pitt is about a worker at the United Nations as he searches the globe for information that can stop the zombie outbreak that is bringing down nations. Like Pacific Rim, an enormous budget is in place for the special effects, and considering the masses of zombies on screen at a time, it's amazing that its even achievable, as zombies are so plentiful that they form tsunamis of undead scrambling to find human flesh from survivors. It looks brilliant, and I'm convinced it'll recover it's budget and prove an entertaining movie despite it's production issue in which the entire third act had to be re-written and re-shot because it supposedly wasn't good enough. Here's the trailer.

Release Date: June 21st

Elysium

Matt-Damon-in-Elysium-2013-Movie-Image-e

Officially my most anticipated movie of the year, this gritty science fiction thriller is being written and directed by Neill Blomkamp (who was behind the breathtaking District 9), and takes place on a ravaged Earth and space habitat named Elysium. Here's the plot outline:

"In the year 2159, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. The people of Earth are desperate to escape the planets crime and poverty, and they critically need the state-of-the-art medical care available on Elysium but some in Elysium will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve their citizens luxurious lifestyle. The only man with the chance to bring equality to these worlds is Max (Matt Damon), an ordinary guy in desperate need to get to Elysium. With his life hanging in the balance, he reluctantly takes on a dangerous mission one that pits him against Elysiums Secretary Delacourt (Jodie Foster) and her hard-line forces but if he succeeds, he could save not only his own life, but millions of people on Earth as well."

With a solid budget, an acclaimed director, and a great cast, I'm extremely eager for the first trailer to be shown. I'm convinced this will be a hit, and it also stars District 9's Sharlto Copley as an assassin sent after Damon.

Release Date: August 9th

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Other notable movies worth mentioning and due out later this year:

- Oldboy: An American thriller starring Josh Brolin, Sharlto Copley and Samuel L. Jackson.

- The Tomb: A prison action thriller starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone and 50 Cent.

- G.I. Joe 2: A Sc-Fi action film starring Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis.

- Monsters University: Pixar computer-animated comedy prequel to Monsters Inc.

Thanks for reading! :)

Top Movies to Watch 2013: Part 1

This year is shaping up great for games, but equally impressive is the variety of promising movies to enjoy. Here is the first half of my list with accompanying trailers for my most anticipated movies this year.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Insidious Chapter 2

insidious__chapter_2__movie_poster__by_a

Not an official poster, but the writer/director duo behind the Saw franchise, and who created the seriously scary first Insidious film, are sure to keep things demonic for the sequel due out this summer in theatres.

Release Date: August 30th

The Wolverine

original.jpg

I've not been a fan of the X-Men series, but I have been a fan of one particular character - Wolverine. Played by Hugh Jackman in an iconic role, Wolverine's past has been shown in the great X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and the sequel that is released in cinemas this July is bound to be another worthwhile entry in an otherwise unremarkable franchise elevated mostly by one character and his retractable claws.

Release Date: July 26th

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Place Beyond the Pines

placebeyondthepines-jpg_174154.jpg

As a big fan of Ryan Gosling's performances and movies (most notably in 'Drive'), it wasn't coincidence that I'd eventually be hyped for this crime drama about a motorcycle stunt rider who turns to robbing banks as a way to provide for his lover and their newborn child. But it's a decision that puts him on a collision course with an ambitious rookie cop (Bradley Cooper) navigating a department ruled by a corrupt detective. The premise sounds excellent, and if that or Ryan Gosling's jacket doesn't get you pumped for The Place Beyond the Pines, then check out this trailer!

Release Date: April 12th

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Evil Dead

30324916.jpg

Initial reactions of a remake were expectedly skeptical, especially considering the commercial success and positive critical response that Sam Raimi's gory shocker garnered back in 1981 (even being banned for years in the UK). However, a series of Red Band trailers and a positive critical reception have proved that this remake will be anything but a failure, and the horror looks unrelenting, while the violent gore looks unforgiving. The trailer is terrifying which makes me extremely curious to what the whole movie will be like! Evil Dead Red Band Trailer.

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For

Sin-City-2-2013-Teaser-Poster.jpg

This neo-noir crime thriller sequel not only will contain a strong ensemble cast and retain the same visual style of the first movie, but also has Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller ideally placed in the directors chairs for a second time. Based on Frank Miller's graphic novel series of the same name, the movie will keep to the story structure seen in Sin City, implementing new characters aswell as keeping existing ones, and I'm sure the movie will be just as entertainingly bloody like before. Bring on October!

Release Date: October 4th

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After Earth

after-earth.jpg?w=533

"In After Earth, one thousand years after cataclysmic events forced humanitys escape from Earth, Nova Prime has become mankinds new home. Legendary General Cypher Raige (played by Will Smith) returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai (played by Jaden Smith). When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitais craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance."

There were multiple reasons to be drawn to After Earth. That brilliant synopsis is one. M. Night Shyamalan who has made great movies such as Signs and The Sixth Sense is another. Will Smith is the final reason and justification to give this ambitious sci-fi thriller a chance. Here's the trailer.

Release Date: June 7th

Oblivion

Filme-Oblivion-cartaz.jpg

Tom Cruise leads the cast in this promising science fiction film that also stars Morgan Freeman. Here's the plot:

In 2073, a 37 year-old former-Marine Commander Jack Harper (Tom Cruise) is one of the last few drone repairmen stationed at Earth which was nearly destroyed by an alien invasion 60 years ago. As part of a massive operation to extract the planet's remaining vital resources, he lives in an airborne "town" floating thousands of meters above the Earth. His mission nearly complete, Jack's soaring existence comes crashing down when he rescues a 22 year-old female stranger from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a series of events that forces Jack to question everything he knows about the war and its aftermath. In addition, after being captured by an insurgency led by 102 year-old Malcolm Beech (Morgan Freeman), Jack is told that the society in which he lives may in fact be a police state.

Oblivion sounds good, and looks like it's making full use of it's $120 million budget. Check out the trailer.

Check back soon for the second half of my most anticipated movies this year! :)

Sony's Playstation 4 Conference

I'm sure many of you were highly anticipating the conference yesterday, and hopefully if you enjoyed it like I did, you went to sleep feeling excited about Sony's next generation console for its release later this year.

Here is a summary of what I enjoyed the most:

PS4 Gameplay Demos

I'm going to be honest, before the conference began I never expected to see any gameplay footage. I was hoping for a selection of titles to be announced accompanied with trailers teasing the graphical capabilities, but no demos. I'll cut to the chase then - Killzone: Shadow Fall blew me away in so many ways. I know it's still in development, but the PS4 gameplay shown was technically outstanding on many different levels. The sharp visuals, the magnificent draw distance, and the breathtaking attention to detail in the environments and characters were nothing short of awesome. It looks different to its predecessors in terms of location and story, but I don't have a problem with that, because the footage we were shown was brilliant, and I can't wait to the release of the PS4 and play this immediately. Check out the demo!

Killzone-Shadow-Fall.jpg

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A surprise new gameplay demo was also on display for the intriguing open world game called Watch Dogs, that first impressed audiences last E3 with it's innovative take on the sci-fi genre and sandbox setting. And again, it didn't disappoint, now being confirmed for next-gen consoles aswell as current gen ones, this game is high up on my anticipated games list and looks tremendously entertaining in so many ways. Here's the gameplay demo!

------------------------------------------------------------------------

PS4 Trailers

Then we were treated to some exceptional trailers and demonstrations that included Sucker Punch's Infamous: Second Son (another sequel that looks familiar but different), then some impeccable attention to detail in the team-based driving game Drive Club, which has been in the works for a decade, and now the results are showing. It's hard not to express enthusiasm for the graphics, especially as it's the first thing you recognise with significant improvements. That goes the same with the trailers for the new Final Fantasy, Deep Down (working title), Destiny, and Knack - all incredibly varied experiences that look stunning and capable of becoming big hits next-gen. Teasing segments of gameplay are edited into the trailers, and the glimpses you get convey just how much better the PS4 will be, ultimately proving already that nothing will rival Sony's latest invention to the Playstation franchise.

sson.jpg

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It wasn't all just trailers for games however, as new social implementations that include the ability to Spectate on friends on the network, new Move technology, and Vita remote play were commendable announcements. There was also impressive technical presentations that included Epic Games' Elemental real-time demonstration and Quantic Dreams' realistic emotion capture feature that will bring new meaning to storytelling within games.

The future of Playstation is clear, ambitious and undeniably exciting when you think over everything presented at yesterday's conference which was well worth the wait, and the time. We have yet to see what the console will look like, and the price of it for that matter, though we did find out about the new Dualshock controller that includes a touch screen integration. And lastly, we breathe a sigh of relief when there won't be a block on used games.

The Playstation 4 is set for release in Holiday 2013, and with such a compelling showcasing of titles, a confirmed 143 development teams working with the next-gen hardware, and tremendous technological advancements, I seriously can't wait to see more on the console ahead of release at E3, for the release of all my anticipated games, and of course the PS4 system. :)

My 2 Most Anticipated movies

This year has been great for movies, and this fall following through to next year is providing us with more of the same awesome entertainment. This year alone I've seen 4 movies at the cinema, which I rarely do. But those movies (to me anyway) simply had to be experienced on the big screen with the surround sound. They were equally impressive and exciting, delivering thrills and enjoyment.

The Grey, The Woman in Black, The Expendables 2, and The Dark Knight Rises were those films I saw, but 2 more that are released early next month are 2 of my most anticipated movies for different reasons, but still hoping they'll have equal enjoyment and personal fulfilment upon viewing. Here are those 2 movies I simply cannot wait to see!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sinister

sinister-movie-poster.jpg

Sinister is a horror movie that is about astruggling true-crime novelist who stumbles into a grim supernatural mystery that threatens the lives of his entire family. Ellison (Ethan Hawke) is seeking inspiration for his latest book when he moves his wife and children into a home where an entire family perished under gruesome circumstances. Terror soon hits closer to home, however, when the writer discovers a box of old family movies in the attic of his new house, and watches in horror as images of various families being murdered flicker before his eyes. Now the deeper Ellison investigates the disturbing case, the more he begins to fear he has stirred an ancient evil that won't rest until it has claimed his entire family.

The plot sounds promising, and the film makes use of found footage to create very disturbing sequences of terror, but the real horror is with the demon antagonist named Bagul - an evil entity that preys on the souls of children and lives through images of himself. Watch the trailer below, and I promise you'll find it chilling. It looks awesome and extremely scary, and I cannot wait to see it.

Taken 2

taken2_uk.jpg

Taken is my favourite movie. Liam Neeson is my favourite actor. There's no doubt I will walk away extremely pleased with this exciting looking sequel to one of the best action films of recent years.

A year afterthe events in Paris, on a trip toIstanbul, Bryan Mills (Liam Neeson) gets a surprise visit from his daughter, Kim (Maggie Grace), and his ex-wife, Lenore (Famke Janssen). The happy reunion turns sour when Lenore is taken by people working for Murad Hoxha, the employer of the men working in the Paris building where Kim's friend, Amanda, was found dead and the father of Marko Hoxha, whom Bryan killed in the previous film. With Lenore held hostage and Kim on the run, Mills must utilize all his lethal skills to rescue them and eliminate any who are seeking revenge against him.

Here's the awesome trailer and my most anticipated movie of the year!

Dexter - Everybody's favourite serial killer

A couple of months ago I decided to make the decision to sign up to Netflix solely for the free month trial (because after browsing there wasn't much to keep me signed up after that period). I had heard of Showtime's Emmy and Golden Globe-winning series 'Dexter' a while ago, and knew eventually I'd want to give it a try.

After watching a few episodes and getting into it, I purchased the Seasons 1-5 boxset for a bargain price, and 2 months later have watched all the episodes and special features, and has left me addicted and wanting more. I guess I'll have to wait for 'Dexter' Season 6 to be released on the 18th June, a pre-order I'm really anticipating!

For those of you who haven't seen it, the show centres on Dexter Morgan, a blood spatter pattern analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department who moonlights as a vigilante serial killer, preying on perpetrators who have slipped through the justice system. Michael C. Hall is perfect as the protagonist, and has deservedly won many awards and nominations for his portrayal of everybody's favourite serial killer. Combining crime drama, mystery, suspense, pschological thrills and black comedy, this on-going television series is a must-see for it's thoroughly engrossing investigations and the heart-pounding suspense as Dexter's secret life becomes harder to hide from his team, friends and family.

And on June 18th here in the UK, the 'Avenging Angel' returns. I cannot wait! :D

Gamespot is going backwards

By backwards, I mean that I don't think Gamespot is improving, but rather subtracting good things and making them less enticing for people who have been a member for a few years.

Hello by the way :D

Back to the topic... Here are a couple of noticeable setbacks that in my opinion are decreasing my attraction to the site:

- The first thing is the design choices. On the main page of a game, you used to be able to click following which would then bring up a neat, small menu that allowed you to pick if you wanted to add a game to your tracking list, wish list, now playing list and collection. It worked successfully and did not require a change. But Gamespot thought otherwise. Instead, on the game page now, you can only follow it. To get the other options you have to type the name of the game 100% accurately into the search bar which lists possibles related to what you typed. It isn't a big issue and you're probably thinking "Scott, that's a petty complaint", but unfortunately the system doesn't always register what you type in, and brings up a list of games irrelevant to what you want. Perhaps being picky, but I just liked the way it was before.

- Secondly, is one choice lately that is clear as day and blatantly not as good. Game scores. Where has the nice bold score of a reviewed game gone, which was clear and attractive next to the title on the top games page for PS3 or other pages? Now the score is very small and in the corner of an image that links you to the review or trailer. What was the point? Changes are meant to be for the better, and in my honest opinion taking away the good-looking score and replacing it with a small print is a crap idea.

- Thirdly, the user reviewing system is hit-and-miss now. You used to click on the user reviews and see a pie chart showing the margins that people scored. That has been scrapped completely. When you try and edit a review, the change which used to instigate immediately now refreshes the page to exactly what was there before, leading to confusion to believe whether it has actually changed. It has, but it takes up to a day to change. Why?

- And lastly, is a mixed complaint about the technical issues and glitches that crop up randomly, aswell as the crappy Fuse which I wish was never invented. From my profile I used to be able to click on friends and see a list of my friends, who I'm tracking and vice versa. Now however, I get transported to a website I don't want to be a part of, whether it's connected to GS or not. The same goes for game updates where I used to be able to click by my inbox, but now have to go to my profile and click the link from there to stay on this site just to see them. Then there is the glitches. I've encountered multiple frustrating errors lately, such as no one being allowed to comment on my blogs, reviews disappearing, and others.

Gamespot just isn't as good as it used to be, and the changes I fear will only keep subtracting from the like factor that used to be so high back when I joined, hence the reason I don't blog often, or remain active for long. This is just an opinion blog, as many others may like the changes. I for one, do not. :|
