no but he has the 178.24 drivers which work fine with having it on. We tried turning it on and off and the framerate seemed about the same. Maybe slightly better with it off actually but it was still going below 30fps during horde rushes.

Thanks for all the help people. Yes i checked those settings and everything is set to application controlled. The only thing that makes sense i guess is the ram. Funny thing is he said grid runs perfect on his rig with all max settings turned on... Maybe left4dead runs better on a quad core compared to dual core?

thanks for the reply..i also thought that the ram was his problem but im still not sure how the hell a card as powerful as a 9800gtx cant run the game on a lowly resolution of 1280x1024. As for CPU a core2 2,4 ghz should be more than enough for this game with a9800 am i wrong? Also I heard at lower resolutions the game is more cpu bound than higher resolutions thats why i thought upping the res might help... anyway ill tell him to get more ram, hopefully it will solve the framerate issues.

Yes. Well at first he was running the 180 drivers but those have problems with multi core rendering so he rolled back to 178.24 and it works fine with multi core rendering. Still, these are fairly new drivers and im using the same ones for my nvidia card and the game runs fine. This is not a driver issue.

So my friend has a core2duo 2.4GHz machine with a 9800GTX+ with 2gb of ram and windows vista.

When playing left4dead at 1280x1024 (he will be upgrading his monitor soon) he gets a solid average framerate of about 40-60 fps with all settings on high except AA and AF but the problem is that during horde rushes the framerate drops down to about 15-25 fps.

I know playing at a lower resolution means your more capped by CPU speed then the GFX card. So does this mean that if he was playing at lets say 1680x1050 or higher he would actually be getting better min framerates during intense horde rushes?

Im surprised even with this specs that on such a low resolution he cant run max settings with at least 40fps MINIMUM as the 9800GTX+ is a pretty powerful card especially for left4dead.

Anybody know why this is happening and what he can do to resolve this issue?

thanks, ill try that but in the meantime does anyone know an answer to this? theres gotta be some program that can show me this information or something. I tried pc wizard and cou-z but they only seem to indicate what the actual ram is running at rather than what the machine's maximum ram potential is.

ok so my question is I have a satellite L300 toshiba laptop.its running on the T3200 intel processor and intel 4 series chipset. toshiba makes it clear that this laptop can ACCEPT PC6400 ram but does not say if it actually runs it at 800mhz or downclocks the DDR2 ram to PC-5300 to run at 667.

I need to know if this machine can support 800mhz ram or not so I can finally know if i should buy 800 or 667 mhz ram.

Of course I dont want to waste money on 800mhz ram only to get it downclocked if its not supported.

It seems intel sats the 4 series chipset (GL140 here) supports 800mhz ram yet my FSP on this processor is only 667mhz.

So im very confused and need help on this, thanks.
