I think Rocksta'rs got to the point that the Final Fantasy series once did. To steal a quote from Adam Sessler, Rockstar could put poop in a shoebox, slap "Grand Theft Auto" on it, and it would still sell probably in the millions lol. No hating on GTA either, just saying lol.
I don't think this article is about marketability, it's about using video games as an artform to discuss faith, which I believe is wholly possible. I've only played Xenogears a little bit, but I've played all of the Xenosaga games and I can tell you that it does make you think about things. I myself am Christian and questioned some of the games subjects, but it made me think. This may sound crazy, but Xenosaga does introduce a lot of interesting concepts that are hard to grasp (Jungian stuff, religion, etc.) but may help better widen your horizons so to speak. Final Fantasy Tactics also discusses religion. In it, the system of religion is displayed negatively (like the catholic church during the middle ages) but it also shows personal faith in a somewhat positive light. Video games can be an artform, although it boils down to the developer whether or not they create something thoughtful, or mindless running and gunning, which sells.
Hitoshi Sakimoto is my favorite composer. His work in Final Fantasy Tactics really contributed to the game and gave it that epic feeling. His work in the Ogre Battle Series is also really good, and iconic. I still get shivers sometimes listening to the opening of Ogre Battle 64.
I don't know, MLG is interesting to watch (This was several years ago when they played Halo 2) but i'm like a lot of other people, I think that it may make an unhealthy trend even more popular. Trust me, I'm pretty sure I may have started to develop Carpal Tunnel, but luckily I preempted it and now I don't play games as much anymore lol.
