i am a ps3 slim owner and i'm thinking of buying an xbox 360 slim (not trading in my ps3 though) but i'm tight on money right now so i'll have the money for it by the first or second week of august and i'm wondering what the differences are (besides cross game chat and the subscription fee). keep in mind that i've been a playstation guy ever since the ps1 days so i've never bought or owned an xbox.
edit: one more question, if/when i do buy the xbox 360 slim, would the xbox 360 slim be fine if a sat my ps3 slim on top of it or should i stand it up next to my ps3?

Well, obviously it has different exclusives to PS3. Multiplatform games often are slightly better than their PS3 counterpart in terms of visuals and performance (lazy ports on PS3 version sometimes, good example is The Orange Box, though I believe it's been patched now). Differences tend to be minute anyway.
Like you said, you'll likely want to subscribe to XBL Gold. This let's you play online MP, use cross-game chat, access to certain deals on Arcade games/DLC etc.
I wouldn't put anything on top of the slim 360, a lot of the vents are places on the top.
If you do buy a slim 360, be aware it only comes with a composite cable (SD), so you'll probably want to pick up another HDMI/Component/VGA cable or something.
Edit: If you're in the US you can also use Netflix and now Hulu I believe. I don't live there so I'm not sure how that all works though.
And the 360 controller is quite different to dualshocks; a fair bit 'bulkier' and it has what I think are better triggers for the R2 button. The D-pad on the 360 controller isn't very good (especially for fighters), though you can buy a new controller design that supposedly remedies this.
