You don't get it. If GTA V on the PS3 looks almost the same on the PS3 as it does on the PS4, why spend the money to upgrade to the new PS4?

Because all of their friends are on the PS4?

Why would their friends purchase a PS4 when they can all stay with their PS3s and have pretty much the same experience?

[QUOTE="Xplode_games"]

You can just keep your current gen machine which you already have a huge library of games for, spent a considerable amount of time building your gamertag and friends lists on and so on?

Isn't the only reason to upgrade to experience the next gen graphics which should be a huge leap above what the current gen offers?

Isn't it ridiculous and suicidal for a company such as Sony or Microsoft to release the PS4/720 with only marginal hardware upgrades? If they did that then it would make all the sense in the world to keep our current consoles and say screw the next gen.

Actually it's even worse than that. This would make a console such as the Wii/Wii U even more attractive. Hardcore gamers will figure, well we're not getting the upgraded graphics so might as well just go with Nintendo who actually innovates with control schemes and has amazing first party support.

I imagine Sony or MS execs would be wreckless to gamble on an underpowered next gen machine when they know the competition could release an uber console that would destroy them.

AdobeArtist

You make this protest without even knowing just how far the hardware upgrades on Microsoft's and Sony's next system will be.

Actually i'm not protesting, i'm just wondering if one of the big two hardware players are in danger of making such a costly mistake. I am hoping both of them bring out great next gen machines that live up to and even surpass expectations. But I have a feeling one of the two is going to stumble badly.

It was Warner.

Warner didn't join till after Vivid, a year later actually.

When Warner announced it would support Blu-ray exclusively, the format war was over instantaneously.

[QUOTE="Kinthalis"]It's not that simple. The cost if subsidizing hardware is astronomical. It's a huge investment. The Wii showed that graphics don't matter to casual gamers, and that's who they are trying to target. Don't kid yourself.CwlHeddwyn
actually Wii sales are in major decline. Motion control was a fad, a HUGE fad that sold tens of millions of consoles to mom and grandmaetc but Nintendo can't replicate the same success so easily.

Agreed. Nintendo is not dumb enough to release an HD Wii with the same motion controls. Problem is, Sony may just be so dumb as to release an underpowered PS4 with Move wand as the standard controls. If they do that, they will be obliterated by the fierce competition.

i dont care my trophies and most of the people on my friends list... 99% of them are randoms..wouldnt take long to add the ones i do want on the ps4. If i want to continue playing those games from this gen...i can... getting a new console doesnt mean i can no longer play the old ones  and if it has backwards compatibility then... and no the only reason to upgrade is to play the new generation of games which wont show up on the last..campzor

Problem is, if the PS4 doesn't sell then the games new generation of games won't show up on the PS3 or PS4, they'll show up on the Xbox 720 after Microsoft kills Sony and turns them into a software company.

I for one can't wait to play some uncharted on my shiny new Xbox 720. How sweet victory is!

I'm sure Sony knew that a $600 console wouldn't likely sell as well as their $250 competition, even if they couldn't have predicted what a massive hit the Wii would actually be. They're not fools. The PS3 was initially designed to win the the format war, even at the expense of next-gen marketshare - and it succeeded at accomplishing that.

It's actually quite shocking that the PS3, despite costing more throughout its entire existence, has nonetheless outshipped the 360 worldwide since its launch (ie., outshipped the 360 between November 2006-today. The 360 holds an install base lead only thanks to launching a year earlier).

SakusEnvoy

Considering the PS2 sold over 150 million vs 25 million for the original Xbox, the big surprise is that the 360 is kicking the PS3's butt all over the place.

[QUOTE="fastr"] Actually HD-DVD was winning the war until vivid, the largest porn company in the world, sided with blue ray. In an industry where hundreds of movies are made each day, it would be silly to think they aren't the biggest factor out there. Even your subconscious knows it, that's why you equate BR with trojans ;)fastr

actually it was about the time Sony sent a fat check to Fox, and warner brothers I believe that the tide turned *confirmed fact Sony paid them to go bluray exclusive*

Mariokart64fan - You don't know Sony, over the last 3 years, hasn't been profitable in over half of their quarters? Sony has openly stated they aren't spending nearly as much towards development of the PS4 as they did with the PS3. Meanwhile, MS is as profitable as ever and will expend both Sony and Nintendo in terms of development of a new console.

thinicer

While MS is definitely profitable, that doesn't mean they are going to spare no expense when it comes to their next console. Sony put out a technologically superior console, and it wasn't the huge money-maker and runaway success they hoped it would be. I think they expected that with such a huge install base for the PS2 that people would just naturally buy a PS3. Who knows? It's a blunder they are likely not going to repeat and one that Microsoft won't duplicate.

Sony's console was only superior to 360 in watching movies. As far as games it was terrible. Very difficult to program for. Developers need a huge budget and talented staff to get the PS3 games to look equal to 360 games. Considering the PS3 launched a FULL YEAR later and at $600 vs $400 for the 360, it was obviously a miserable failure tech wise. But yes for movies it's great.

Consumers like shiny new products, and Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo will hype their new console as being able to do more than the 360/PS3/Wii (even if they are similar in power) which will lure a bunch of people in.

And because developers understand new consoles will sell then they will develop games for the new consoles, and eventually more and more people will upgrade to play those games, and ditch their 360/PS3/Wii.

Ly_the_Fairy

This would be true if the videogame industry was a monopoly and consumers had no choice.

Being as it's not monopoly then if a company such as Sony decides to release an underpowered system, then Microsoft can releasse an uber powered 720 and consumers would have the choice.

The choice would be to upgrade to a next-gen console with the same graphics but new features or choose a next-gen console with truly a monster leap forward in graphics and amazing new games to play. I would easily go with the actual next gen machine and not the piece of garbage system with the same graphics we've been looking at for the past 7 years.
