FFXIII story was horrible combined with linearity it completely killed the game for me. You cant do stuff unless the developers want it to happen until end game. Garbage.
I give the nod to FFXIII as I preferred the story and battle system, however I loved the openness of Lost Odyssey.

The story in FFXIII was pure garbage (melodrama, worst cast of FF characters except for like Sazh) and there was no atmosphere to the game, and the battle system can play itself. You could do more in LO than FFXIII.
Just rent this game, but don't expect anything out of it. I didn't like the story in this one (it sucks), and except for the story there isnothing going on for this game, because they took out everything that made it an FF game.
You are right. But I think some changes can be too drastic and some too little. I think the key is to ADD not CHANGE/REMOVE. So for instance, some of the best sequels this gen (MGS4, GoW3, Halo 3, Gears 2, UC2) kept the same basic gameplay but added improvements and features. Games usually get a lot of backlash when they change the formula up too much, add very little to the game, or take the story in a stupid nonsensical direction.II_Seraphim_II

The story isnt weak. Its a million times better then 90 percent of this gens stories People just bash it cos it's FF and for some reasons it's uncool to be in the majority here in system wars. If this was a game from a random 3rd party dev then it would be praised to high heaven.FFXIII's story is by far one of the worst videogame stories ever made.
