@okassar Personally, I wish they'd just break the cycle and sell cheaper consoles that they either break even on or even make a slight profit with. It's been so long since consoles have been upgraded that I think they can actually do that now, with hardware equivalent to current-gen PC gaming rigs.

It would still be several times as powerful as our current consoles.

@idosofacility I agree. I could easily wait until 2015 or 2016 for a new generation, although most gamers probably would want it in 2015 at the latest. It's a nice even number that screams "the future". So for marketing purposes, I'd try to hit a 2015 release date.

That number just sounds so cool, just like the year 2020. When we'll all have jetpacks, of course. And cybernetics. And possibly an alien invasion, and lasers. Because it's the year 2020 dammit! And all the old sci-fi tv shows from like the 80's and 90's SAY that we'll have all that stuff in the year 2020!

@hadlee73 Unfortunately, that's a correct assessment in my opinion. Especially if the hardware is significantly more powerful.

@deadmonkey76 @rfalstad @halo117xbox I still own a PS3, but it's mostly for Blu-Ray playing and for streaming Crunchyroll via the PS3 app. It's not available for the 360. That said, I agree that the PS3 doesn't have many good exclusives. I only like Uncharted, but I don't really play it that much, so I'm almost always on my 360 or PC. That said, I don't hate my PS3, I just don't use it very much.

@steelmouth

Now THIS is why I always thought it was stupid for Microsoft to name their second console the "360". That and not including a hard drive as a standard. The original X-box had an 8 gig base hard drive, dammit!

I bet they'll have to call it the 720 or something, but the next one will probably be the X-box 4, because it's not as stupid sounding as calling the next X-box the X-box 3, when the previous one was the X-box 360. It's confusing when 2 consecutive consoles have the number "3" in it. Not a problem for the next one after the 3rd X-box.

I think they'll announce something for Holiday 2014, on the verge of 2015. Console cycles should be about 10 years long, if you ask me. There's just no point in replacing your gaming box and making your entire back catalog of console games irrelevant and unplayable on new machines every 5 years or so.

It would be one thing if game systems were more backwards compatible, but they seriously aren't. Not for the more obscure games I like anyways. And the new PS3's aren't backwards compatible at all!

Yeah I agree. Despite the X-box 1's sheer power, the PS2 dominated its generation despite being the weakest console.

@WithoutGraceXII That's what I'm saying. Console release announcements are usually months in advance. Way more in advance than just 2 months or so.

@Albaficas Oh my gosh, seriously? If tha'ts how it is, how can they call it a Final Fantasy game? Final Fantasy is about choice and exploration, right? Not linearly moving forward without any side paths or places to explore.

@Metallicwolf29

Yeah, what you suggest would've been a much better idea.
