I am a senior in high school. I have taught myself a wide variety of topics that fall outside any course taught at my school including Mulitvariate Calculus, Topology, Quantum Mechanics, General Relativity, Computer Architecture, Japanese, etc. I have also qualified for a state-wide mathematics competition.

Yet despite the fact that I have demonstrated a great proficiency to all my mathematics and science teachers I will be held back from graduating this year. The reason? I'm failing English.

As you can probably guess, I am a Math and Science person. I derive pleasure from cold, hard, logic and rigour. I get somewhat giddy when I develop a mathematical proof or when I observe experiments in the lab going as planned. To me if it can't be quantified or described by formulas then it really isn't worth much trouble to study. That is my first problem with English.

My second problem with English lies in the fact that we're forced to read books that a certain group, or sometimes the certain individual teaching, thinks are worthy of being studied. It then turns into a cold-hearted study of the book with worksheets and deadlines and the ever present teacher holding a gun to your head telling you to understand it the way she does or you fail. You aren't free to work at your own pace and glean enjoyment out of the novel as the medium is intended to be used and this in my opnion is what causes many students to be apathetic towards it.

But the thing I hate most about the entirety of the system is the fact that advancement through the system leans so heavily on English regardless of interests or career goals. Yes, I know that a career in math or science would require a lot of formalized writing but I don't think a physicist will look back on the novels he read in high school and then say to his colleuage "Because Celie had Lesbian Sex with Shug in the Color Purple I believe that Higgs Boson to exist."

Don`t sweat that brah, there are plenty of ways you can get your highschool diploma with out being in the public school system.

[QUOTE="atoria56"]Is anyone aware that Bush can stay president if a major catastrophe happens during this presidential election? He has the power to cancel the election all together but the thing that makes me uneasy is that Bush himself has already stated that we will get a attack worse than 9-11 (Which is most likely going to be an inside job). What is your opinion on this?gobo212

Democratic Congress Kick's His A$$ out of the whitehouse, tosses him in jail if it tries it. The president is far from all powerful.

The bill has already been passed that if a catastrophe does happen he takes control of the branches so they would be powerless to do anything. NWordJohn has posted a link a few pages back.

That wasn't a bill. Congress had nothing to do with it.

Congress is just a mask for people plenty of bills have been signed without the consent of congress.

I`m not really worried just making other people aware of things that are about to happen.

1) A majority of your soldiers are in OVERSEAS bases, not necessarily in the Middle East

2) Operation Urban Warrior was staged using foreign troops on American Soil training them to disarm civilians in the event of martial law

3) The chinese were patrolling your streets when the Olympic torch was over here, even though it was a special para military squad not actual police officers

gobo212

I can get that sort of argument, but the way he was putting them forward sounded like the same sort of people who claim foreigners are "taking our jobs". I still stand by my third point though, that was a special event and (as far as I can tell) Chinese police aren't continuely patrolling the streets.

No but operation urban warrior is kind of chilling to watch clips of. They show people being drug out of their houses and handcuffed for no reason while yelling things like "you can't do this, I have rights! This is against the constitution". It was actually training for soldiers to be able to not listen to people in that sort of situation.

I'm stockpiling weapons as we speak...

Some survival guides you stock up swords and bow & arrows since they don't have to be registered. Make sure you get dry goods like beans, rice, etc.

[QUOTE="atoria56"]All our soldiers are overseas and while we are in this "War On Terror" they are sucking us citizens dry of any protection from the military I.E. they are sending the NATIONAL GUARD overseas to fight remember the name is not INTERNATIONAL GUARD so why would they be doing that? While this is all going down foreign troops are coming over here, why would they have Chinese police patrolling our streets during the torch ceremony instead of our cops? Most cops are sell outs because guess what if there is Martial Law who will be carrying it out our so called protect and serve cops.AirGuitarist87

That is the most incoherent inconsistent statement I have read this year. Let's review:

1. "All our soldiers are overseas" - I highly doubt the US sent 1.4 Million troops to the Middle East

2. "Foreign troops are coming over here" - I am unsure what you mean by this. An invasion wouldn't go unnoticed and I'm unaware of restrictions on nationality joining the US army

3. "why would they have Chinese police patrolling our streets" - I dunno, possibly because you pulled this out your ass?

I can't tell if you're trying to be funny in some crazy way or whether you're serious and have no clue what you're talking about.

First I would like to start off by saying thanks to Nwordjohn for backing me while I was away. Now how in the world did it sound like I was talking about foreigners taking our jobs? Foreign Troops and Foreign Citizens are two different things if Foreign Troops are on our soil then I should be alarmed and its not an invasion guy they are being allowed over here. If we are such a country of solidarity then we should be alarmed that the president was knighted (bowed down) by the queen of England but since you are the type of person that is frightened when taken out of your comfort zone I can see why what I say angers you. Learn some respect and open your eyes instead of insulting someone that is trying to pass information to you so your family and you can be safe.
