I used to play a lot of 25mm Napoleonic stuff as well as some Ancients (usually Romans vs. Carthage) but my favourite system was 25mm Victorian Era battles using The Sword and the Flame.

We also used to do a lot of miniature conversions of boardgames, chiefly we'd use micro armour to play out Avalon Hill's Squad Leader battles.

I quit playing around the time WH 40K came out. I thought the game concept and art were juvenile and the game mechanics goofy.

Final Fantasy and Valkyria Chronicles aren't sellings points.

As others have mentioned, I'd much rather have a turn based RPG with depth rather than another action game masquerading as an RPG. The goofy cartoon graphics seal the deal.

Actually, I'm not passing of the graphics. Technically, they seem fine. I'm passing on the art style. As I said, it looks far too cartoonish to me and that's a turn off. Same reason I won't get SWTOR.

Why would I want to play the demo if I no longer have any interest in the title?

It's geared towards the hardcore flight sim crowd and, as a sim, it's very well made. I tend to play a lot of flight sims and I respect what the devs have done here (even though I don't play it much. I prefer WWI and WWII era sims. Plus, the ShkVal weapons system is insanely frustrating.)

You can play the arcade mode, but I wouldn't recommend it. When played as an action-arcade game, it doesn't stack up to the other-relaxed realism games out there. You won't get much in the way of variety and graphically, the terrain looks very basic unless viewed from close up.

Yup, it's a great game but there is a steep learning curve. You also might want to grab the balance mod. Check out spaceempires.net for tips and mod suggestions.
