[QUOTE="burpysmurph"]We all share our ideas, but I do not appreciate being attacked by ignorant thugs for it, and in light I will not blame you.
Idolizing, no matter how petty, is an unfortunate circumstance of online existence.
I do indeed appreciate the behind-the-scenes work involved in creating music the massas can enjoy. I myself am a former rock/pop music performer, and I am personally disgusted at how easy it was to influence "weak" minds, but I will never again go there.
I have learned much about music since then, and I will never go back to what I was. I despise modern pop and rock music because I understand not only how shallow it is from a technical aspect, but I hate more what it represents from a sociological aspect, and perhaps that is why I have been so verbose up to now.

Well, then you and I certainly share something in common - a distaste for modern popular music. But I feel it's important to point out that if the ultimate goal of music is enjoyment and communication, this music that we despise IS doing its job. I could never bring myself to write or play pop or rock knowing what I do about music, but I'm glad it is bringing fulfillment to the people who enjoy it (both the creators and the consumers). Until we significantly boost arts education, it is doubtful that most people will be able to take much from more intellectually demanding art, and so they would have access to nothing.
Those who are well-versed in an art form tend to demand more from it, and conversely, the less you know about an art form, the less likely it is that you will be able to appreciate a complex work in that particular form. Like it or not, people who know a great deal about music are much fewer in number than those who know very little about it, and so if you take the position that music should be about enjoyment and appealing to the common man (a point of view with which I tend to agree), then you should at least tolerate popular music in Western culture, because without it, many would have no access to music they can readily appreciate and would likely choose to ignore it altogether.
It's 5 am here. Weekend or not, time for me to pack it in. :P
Good night.
I still beleive that music is for the people that will actually listen to it, but I still believe that the people that matter are the ones that will actually take the time to listen to it. I'm not talking about the morons that tune into public rock stations, I am talking about the potential NPR listeners that know better but still have crap taste in music. They know better but can't bear to admit it! America is the hardest country to break away from the substandard norms, but the opportunities are nonetheless there. It's just so hard to see life and music differently when you are surrounded by ugly mediocrity and crapness on a daily basis, and the overwhelming influence of Republicanism does NOT help!
The human spirit will always prevail to a select few. I must seem horribly political at this point, but if you ain't feelin' it, screw you! Republicans hate creativity! It is anti-Republican to have a free mind or spirit! Progress is through Socialism!
