Its basically a Linux distribution. So no, I can download Linux for free from multiple different sites. About the only way I would buy it is if it played all my Windows games just like Windows plays them.

You can do that first if you want, I suppose. But the other steps are very important. Otherwise you'll still have leftover Nvidia files and utilities that will seriously impede the functionality of your new card.
I like Gparted. Download it, burn it to a CD, boot your PC from the CD. I know there are a couple partition utils that work within Windows, but I'm just tossing my preference out there.
Totally worth the upgrade. Certain programs, like Antivirus, might need to be uninstalled beforehand. Windows 7 setup runs an upgrade advisor that will ask you to do so before the install proceeds. Otherwise all your programs and settings will remain intact.
